after considering DevonThink for additional note taking, I’ll stick with Scrivener: My “notes & ideas” project is always open and auto starts with my Mac…nice…
However, what also struck me with big screenplay projects on my Mac Pro using two screens: Scrivener doesn’t even remember my most basic screen settings. They are not really complex layouts (for that I actually saved a screen layout that I can recall with a keystroke). It’s simply how the editors are split.
Example: My “notes and ideas” project uses one of my Mac Pro screens. It contains the binder, two horizontally split editors and the inspector. The editors are evenly split, so I see a good part of the cork board in the upper half and a document in the lower half, for example a list of notes or a web page. The inspector is a bit wider than usual, so it takes up a fourth of my screen on the right.
BUT: Every time I restart this project (or any project), those split points are reset to some defaults that I don’t like and that don’t make any sense at all: The inspector is very narrow for such a big screen, the upper editor with the cork board is so small that I can’t even see one index card completely, and the lower editor is more than two thirds of my screen!
Find attached two screen shots: What I set it up to and what it is restored to after a restart…
Wouldn’t it be better to at least save these basics with the project? Or am I missing an option here?
That definitely shouldn’t be happening - Scrivener should be reopening the project laid out exactly as it was when you closed it. Please try the beta of 2.2 (which will be out soon) by downloading it from this forum:
There was a bug whereby split positions weren’t getting saved correctly in some circumstances which has been fixed, so hopefully that’s the same bug that’s affecting you. Let me know if you still have the same issue in the 2.2 beta (2.1.0.6, I think).
thank you very much! That did the job! My split settings are saved now and are restored with the project…
Just another question: The same does NOT apply if I change my window size across the borders of my main screen: One of my projects contains so much info that I make the main window wider than my screen, so the main screen can be used for binder and two editors, while the inspector lies on the second screen. Additionally, I opened the project notes and QR on the second screen.
Scrivener saves the positions of the extra windows (notes and QR), but the main window size is always reduced back to the main screen borders after a restart. My settings can only be restored if I save them as a screen layout and click on “use” after launching Scrivener. Is that an expected behavior?
As for the window size, yes, I think that’s just a Mac OS X thing, I’m afraid - it always tries to keep windows on the screen when sizing them to begin with, so I believe that is a limitation.
