You’ll find a clear answer here.

To be fair, all that thread says is that 2.0 will really be named 3.0. No date is given for expected roll-out. Not that I expect such a thing to occur, obviously
And with the iOS troubles they’ve had, I don’t think you will ever get a date out of them again. Unless that date is in the past.
A technicality, but a dispositive one. Scriv’s a superb tool; let’s hope the plan pays off.
As is right and proper. I prefer software that works.
Hi all, hi Srivener Team,
actually I do not ask for a date.
I just ask for a year. Is it 2017? 2016? 2015?
To give a year should be possible in my opionion.
regards
Hi Steman,
I think the implication is that, despite being labeled 1.x, the Windows version is much closer in reality to the 2.x Mac features than the 1.x ones. In other words, you have 2.x for Windows now, they just didn’t charge for the major release upgrade because Windows (after it’s initial release) got there much faster.
As for the timeline for the next major upgrade, I don’t know. Whenever it’s ready.
The most helpful answer depends on why you want to know so badly. If it’s simply because you’ve got a bet with a friend, my (uninformed) guess is that 2016 is more likely than 2015, and that the team would prefer 2016 to 2017. But I’m just guessing that because:
If the reason you want to know is because you’re worrying about an upgrade coming out just after you bought an earlier version, I’d say don’t worry. LitNLat give sensible discounts to upgraders and last time gave a free upgrade to people who bought the previous version in the window just before release.
If the reason is that you think the current Windows version is somehow holding you back, my advice is just crack on through! If there’s a specific thing you want to do but can’t see how, ask that question in the Tech Support forum; we’re pretty good at helping people find a way to do what they need.
If the reason is simply uncontainable excitement, well… I hear you, buddy!
Very dear Scrivener Community,
thank you for all the responses. Actually I do for certain miss one crucial point in the windows version: the advanced synopsis management (show and hide the synopsis content - or just only the title of it). I know it was one major and new option of Mac’s version 2 so therefore it makes sense it is missing in windows first release. I would heavily depend on that feature and that is why I was asking for a release year. Now I know I have to wait again one year.
Greetings from Germany!
After watching endless vids on Scrivener, I was quite excited to purchase it…and I had big plans. I was finished up a small project and spent 20+hours digging through instructions, help, youtube videos, etc. just trying to figure out how to make a decent and customized table of contents for Kindle…
…then…DOH! I’m Windows…and I don’t have version 2. As a noob, I had no idea that there would be different versions and such differences. I really wish this had been made in-your-face clear before purchase and I would’ve saved over a week’s worth of effort.
I went back to Word to finish my project…wasted 40 bucks, 20+ hours finding solutions, 10+hours learning Scrivener
Yeah, an anticipated “year” to move to version 2 or whatever would be kinda nice lol
You did all that research but didn’t find that Scrivener has a 30 day free trial and a whole chapter in the manual dedicated to creating a table of contents?
Also, and I’m not trying to be argumentative so please don’t take it that way, if you’re thinking of using Scrivener as a formatting / DTP tool and not for producing the first draft, you’re not ‘getting’ Scrivener yet. Don’t let the table of contents of all things dictate how you write the book itself!
If Word works for you, then you should definitely use it. I’m a big fan of Word and use it myself a lot for certain types of document. I’d definitely encourage experimenting with Scrivener further, though, to see if it has a place in your workflow (its tools for developing a long-form work are second to none – by a huge margin – including fantastic outlining tools, the corkboard, synopsis, keywords for tracking characters and other elements, labels, custom metadata, dynamic collections, write-once-format-severally, document notes, research repository, etc etc)… Especially since you’ve already invested in the licence.
I agree with all that Mr. P has written immediately above.
In addition, I’d make an additional point, which is far from new but still bears repeating. The current version of Scrivener for Windows has significantly more features and functionality than Scrivener for the Mac 1.x had at a similar stage. Yet with those features and that functionality, significant numbers of books were written, including commercial successes by well-known authors.
Perhaps, Keith could at least give us a smidgeon of a hint. I know he’s been reluctant to give even the vaguest estimates because they’ve underestimated and had development setbacks in the past, but all this hype over the iOS version just makes me want feature parity even more. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to be able to use scrivener on my ipad (and even more so to have an android version for my Moto X), but I’d mainly use it for editing purposes.
Since Windows is skipping 2.0 altogether I just wonder how far along Windows development is compared to Mac or even if a 2017 release for 3.0 more likely than 2016?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Will I be needing to buy the new major release when it comes out or how is that supposed to work. I’m starting to love Scrivener by the way and look forward to Scrivener 3.0 for Windows.
