Scrivener 3.3.2 crashed, won't re-open on MacOS 11.7.8

I’m running Scrivener 3.3.2 on Macbook Air (2020 model) using Big Sur 11.7.8

It has been stable with no issues for the past year or so, but crashed overnight and when I tried to re-open this morning, I got a very long error report. As a new poster here, I can’t embed the image but a copy-and-paste of the first part is below. I’m assuming this might be related to the auto-update for 3.3.2. I’ve tried closing everything and restarting with no success, and that is about the limits of my tech skills.

Can anyone tell me from this what the source of the problem might be? Is there a simple fix, like updating my OS or un-installing/reinstalling Scrivener?

I rely on Scrivener for work so this is a BIG issue.

Thank you. Going to try that as well as updating Big Sur to 11.7.10 and see if it resolves the issue. I’m not quite ready to go to Sonoma because of some other older apps I run that might not be compatible.

It can’t hurt to get the latest Big Sur release for the security patches anyways.

Just a note, that’s macOS 10.13 or later, not 13 or later. We still support back to High Sierra with 3.3.2. Though, as noted above, anything below 11 at this point is a moderate security risk if you let it go online.

My mistake. I misread. Apologies. Removed my post.

Okay I upgraded to MacOS 11.7.10 and re-downloaded/installed Scrivener from the website but still getting the same error message. Should I completely un-install Scrivener and reinstall from scratch? Go back to the previous version of Scrivener? Starting to regret having auto-updates.

I don’t know why it crashes, but there’s no point in uninstalling / reinstalling Scrivener (that’s basically what the installer does, so you performed that already).

Could you launch Scrivener while pressing and holding the Shift-Key (the whole time)? What happens?

(Going back to 3.3.1 might also help, but let’s try this first.)

No, that didn’t work. Maybe going backwards is my only option at this point.

Can’t get worse, give that a try.

Reporting back to say I trashed Scrivener 3.3.2 and went back to 3.3.1 (downloaded the ZIP file from the website) and it is all working again. Just opened my current projects and everything looks fine. Phew!

A good lesson for me not to trust auto-updates (and perhaps also an issue with the update for the L&L team to look into).

Just to say that i had the EXACT same issue, and scrivener now works having gone back to an older version.

I responded in this thread, which I saw first:

Probably all the threads will get consolidated at some point.

I’m also getting this segmentation fault 11. Started a couple of days ago. I hadn’t changed anything, but maybe the app got updated.

I’m on Mac OS Big Sur 11.6.2.

Scrivener version is 3.3.2.

I purchased an installed it via the Mac App Store. I’ve deleted the app and then reinstalled it (by clicking on the cloud icon in the App Store) and still get the same error.

I’m not sure how I can downgrade to the previous version given that I install it via the App Store.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Fixes?
