Scrivener 3 don't save images

Hello,
I have recently been using scrivener in previous versions. If I insert an image into a text, once I save and reopen scrivener the image is lost.
Any suggestions?

How are you inserting the image?

Personally, I prefer using Insert > Image linked to file. Scrivener updates the inserted image every time it opens or compiles. If you edit an image or replace it with one of the same location/name Scrivener auto updates it. I’ve never had any issues this way in Scrivener 3 Win or Mac.

Hi RuffPub,
In previous versions of scrivener, the inserted images appeared in the text. The behaviour was exactly as shown in the movie ā€œWriting - Adding Images to Text - YouTubeā€.
In version 3, the image is inserted, but once Scrivener is closed and reopened, it disappears.

Have to be honest, haven’t used that method in years.

As I say, I use the Insert > Image linked to file (actually use the drop down on toolbar) method as it is always up to date with any changes you might make, and to be honest, I just find it easier, and touch wood, never fails.

Hi RuffPub,
I understand your point of view but I have two considerations:

  1. if Literature & Latte itself puts a video about how images can be included in a text this has to work and I’d expect that a feature of a previous version is always maintained in the next one.
  2. inserting images as a reference is very inconvenient because you don’t immediately see if the image you are using is the right one and if it is in the right place.
I have to figure out if it’s a Version 3 Bug or if it’s my computer or my installation fault.
Could it be that I’m the first one to whom this happens?

I never assume what worked in one version of software will work the same in subsequent versions. In 40+ years in IT I’ve seen more that don’t. ā€˜Progress’. Scrivener V3 Win is a ground up re-write to bring it up to similar with V3 Mac.

Using the process I suggested, the image appears immediately so you can see if it is all correct and is refreshed every time you open. If you edit an image or overwrite it with same name using Affinity Photo for example and want to immediately confirm the image is correct you simply double click it in Scrivener, hit Change, then accept and it changes the embedded image.

I’ve found it foolproof. I know others use Scrivener embedded code.

This is absolutely a bug, and one I’ve never encountered on the Mac version. I’m not currently using Windows for writing, so I don’t have that version of Scrivener.

Recently, I’ve been copying & pasting ā€œreader viewā€ versions of certain web pages into text documents in my project, most of which include pictures. None of them have lost those pictures. Anything saved to an RTF, from text to formatting, footnotes, etc… including pictures, should be preserved.

How are you inserting the image (drag & drop a file from your hard drive/drag from a browser window/copy & paste from a PDF)?
If known, what format of image file is it? JPG/GIF…
When you ā€œsaveā€, what do you mean by that other than letting Scrivener’s auto-save trigger after 2 seconds of inactivity?
Rather than closing your project and re-opening it, what happens if you navigate away from the doc with your inserted image, and then return to it? I’m wondering if making Scrivener re-load that document from disk exhibits the same issue. If not, does closing Scrivener and then re-opening it still lose the image from the document?
Is the document in question always in the draft folder, or the research folder, or does it happen to documents in both/other locations?

Knowing the precise steps/image formats will help them track the bug down and reproduce it.

Hi Robert,
I made a video showing the error but I can’t put it in the post! The video would clarify the situation.
I don’t understand why I can’t put an attachment. If I try to attach something to the post the answer is always: "Sorry, new users can not upload attachments."
Children of a Lesser God ? Unbelievable I don’t understand what merits I have to earn to be able to put a simple attachment. This would be enough to immediately discard a software that I have been using since 2015 !!!.
In any case:
How are you inserting the image (drag & drop a file from your hard drive/drag from a browser window/copy & paste from a PDF)?
Drag and drop from file manager as I have always done since 2015

If known, what format of image file is it? JPG/GIF…
.png same behaviuor with jpg

yes

"navigate away from the doc with your inserted image, and then return to it ?? " I don’t understand. in any case if I open another document and then, without saving, return to the first document the image remains

always in the draft folder

You mention previous versions. Have you uninstalled previous version before installing V3, or installed in different directories?

Another alternative is uninstall and reinstall.

Perhaps email support@ with details. You can attach images to the email. This is a forum primarily for users to assist each other though L&L staff do jump in at times.

Hi Tini,

Please don’t take personally your current inability to upload attachments to the forum. My understanding is that restricting this capability for relatively new posters is a spam management tactic. (Which seems to be working very well, as I’ve seen no spam posts since they’ve moved to this new message forum.)

I don’t know what the required number of posts or time spent on the forum is until you’ll be able to upload attachments, but you certainly will be able to at some point.

As already suggested, you may want to email L&L support directly at windows.support@literatureandlatte.com as what you’re experiencing clearly seems to be a bug.

Best,
Jim

Hi JimRac
nothing personal. I understand your point of view but I think you can understand the difficulties in dealing with a problem and trying to explain it without images or links.
In Italian there is a motto " you are right but I am not wrong" (I hope the translation is clear).
To get back to the problem:

  • I have uninstalled everything
  • I deleted all the leftovers
  • deleted all the logs
  • and reinstalled everything.

Now everything works fine. Probably the bug is due to the fact that I installed over an older version of Scrivener.
Thank you all for your help
Gabriele
