Scrivener crashes constantly

Hi,

I am using the trial version 1.2.3.0 on fully up-to-date WinXP SP3. Any project I create crashes after just a few minutes. Then reopening the project gives the “multiple computer” warning.

I am trying to convert a Word file into Scrivener format to reorganize and edit. Figuring it was something in the Word doc causing the crash, I tried several different import methods. I finally converted the Word doc to full text and imported it as text with the same result.

Any thoughts? So far the trial version has been exactly that, a trial.

I’m so sorry you’re having such a rough time! The multiple project warning just means that the project didn’t close properly, so the userlock file inside is still present–this is to help safeguard the project in collaborative situations, or where you might be accessing the same project from multiple computers (such as via a Dropbox account); making changes to the project while it is open on another computer would corrupt the project, hence the warning. In this case, since you know that the project is not open elsewhere, you can just disregard it without harm.

Are you getting any error messages with the crash or any other lead-up behavior (a long freeze or such) or does the program simply close immediately without warning and without any other indication that there was a problem? You indicated that you are attempting to import files; does the crash happen immediately after import, or is there something else that you’re attempting that seems to consistently trigger the crash? Any details here would be helpful, as certainly you shouldn’t be seeing this and we want to sort it out as quickly as possible!

To that end, Scrivener should be creating some crash reports on your system which might help track down the problem. Could you please navigate to your Scrivener installation folder in Windows Explorer (probably C:\Program Files\Scrivener) and open the folder called “minidump”, then zip and attach the most recent file there in an email to windows.support AT literatureandlatte DOT com (“attn: Jennifer”) along with the description of your crash?

Could you also please let me know whether you’re running a 32- or 64-bit version of Windows and whether it’s a non-English localization? There’s a crash bug Lee’s been busy fixing that could be related to what you’re seeing, but I believe it’s specific to 64-bit non-English localizations.
