It worked fine for the longest time, but now it just crashes and closes. I need to look at those characters sheets.
Mac Book Pro Sonoma 14.5
Oh and I’m using a Jen Terpstra template.
Welcome to the forum!
What version of Scrivener? I can’t help you with this, but the version will be needed by those who can - you can add it to you profile under “version” (instead of “laptop” )
Thank you! Version 3.3.6 (16205)
oh and thank you!
Do you only see the crash with those character sheets, or do other parts of the project crash as well? What about other projects?
Did you recently upgrade anything? Scrivener? Mac OS? Other software on your system?
ooff if i only remember. I don’t think so? Not Scrivener for sure.
The odd thing is, it only crashes with the very first character sheet. The others below are fine. The little wheel thinks a bit longer than usual but then it opens (It didn’t do that before)
It doesn’t crash with any other action. Does that help?
Is the project shared with a cloud service?
By “first character sheet” do you mean the first one you attempt to open regardless of where it is in the Binder? Or do you mean that a specific character sheet document always fails to open?
If the latter, try dragging it out to a brand new project, close and reopen Scrivener, and see if the new project also crashes.
Is the project shared with a cloud service? → I don’t know. Would that be automated? Or where would I upload.
Or do you mean that a specific character sheet document always fails to open? - THIS!
How do I do this - dragging it out?
If you had installed a service like Dropbox, presumably you would know it.
However, Apple has become somewhat aggressive about enabling iCloud options by default. In the Apple → System Settings → Internet Accounts → iCloud pane, you want to be wary of the “Optimize Mac Storage” option. Under iCloud Drive in that same pane, the “Documents and Desktop” option is a known troublemaker.
To drag the problem character sheet out to a separate project, first create a new project using any convenient template. Blank is fine. Then drag and drop the problem file from the original project into the new one.
I really appreciate your fast replies!
Ok so no cloud - cause I turned it off. I backup my data on a hard drive. Too much cloud clatterup
So before I drag and drop. Is there a chance that something breaks? I’m just hesitant that it might fall apart? Maybe I’m overly cautious?
Also maybe that’s a total noob question. Where in the binder do I see a new project. So far I have 2 projects and they open in separate windows? So I’m unsure where to move the character sheet in the binder.
thank you.
File → New Project creates a new project. The Blank template is fine. When Scrivener asks, tell it to save the new project to any convenient location. It will have a Binder with Scrivener’s three standard folders: Draft, Research, and Trash.
In a separate window, open the project with the problem character sheet.
Drag the problem character sheet from its current project to the new one you just created. Any convenient location is fine.
(By default, this is a Copy, not a Move operation, and will not change the source project. Still, if you’re concerned, use File → Backup → Backup Now to backup the source project first.)
Close the new project. Reopen it. Try to open the character sheet. What happens?
Do you put images into your character sheets? A messed up image that escaped detection initially is one of the most common causes for text items to cause a crash when trying to load them. That would certainly explain why only one of them is causing problems.
