I used my passport drive to restore all my files to a new Mac. Unfortunately had to use a months old backup. Now, every time the Mac goes to sleep, Scrivener crashes and I lose everything. It reopens in old documents and doesn’t bring up new backups. Is there a fix for this? And if I need to uninstall and reinstall, how do I redownload the software? Thanks.
Two questions:
- Did you restore from a Time Machine backup stored on your passport drive or using a third-party software?
- How did you install Scrivener? From the L&L website or via Apple’s App Store?
Yes, it was a Time Machine backup. And it’s been a while, but I believe I installed from the website.
I still have the receipt, so it was from the site.
Okay, then it’s the first link in my previous post. (Download - Literature & Latte)
- Drag Scrivener from your Applications folder to the Recycle Bin (or hit ⌘⌫).
- Download the installer.
- Double-click the installer and follow the instructions.
(This doesn’t affect any settings or data.)
Okay, thanks. I had a feeling I needed to reinstall. I appreciate your help.
It may not be the solution, but we need to rule that out first.
I’ll try that first. I love this software, so definitely going to work on a solution.
Knock on wood! If that doesn’t do it and further investigation is needed, the band-aid would be quitting Scrivener before sleep (there’s also an automatic setting for this).
For future reference for anyone else reading the thread, it’s always a good idea to install a new copy of Scrivener from a fresh download on any new system. Among other things, each new version includes compatibility fixes for whatever version of Mac OS was current at the time. Install an old version on a new computer and you’re very likely to inflict a whole bunch of bugs on yourself.
It didn’t fix the problem, so I’ll have to set it up to quit before my Mac goes to sleep. Just FYI.
Hmmm. The root cause is hopefully not something that will haunt you under normal circumstances (like macOS’ dreadful Optimize Mac Storage “feature” or other maintenance stuff that happens when you think your Mac sleeps). ![]()
One question. Where are your Scrivener files stored?
Dropbox, which didn’t sync when I did the restore. That’s another issue I’ve been trying to fix.
Have you made sure that the folder you are storing your Scrivener files in is set to ‘Make Available Offline’?
This is essential!
Scrivener is not designed to be used with direct cloud storage.
I’ll change my backup process to my hard drive and see if that helps. Right now, I’m backing up constantly and set up Scrivener to automatically turn off, but I’m not real happy with that option. I do appreciate you all trying to help. Like I said, I’ve been writing in Scrivener for years and I love the program.
Good move. For your info, here is what I do:
-
Scrivener projects in ~/Dropbox/apps/Scrivener. This gets backed up routinely by my 3-2-1 backup regime. Lots of internet articles about 3-2-1 backup regime. I store projects in Dropbox so that I can sync easily with iPhone and iPad. Dropbox set for “make available offline”
-
Scrivener Backups stored in local drive ~/Backups/Scrivener as *.zip files, keeping 25 copies, automatically create on close of project. I never use “save as …” as I don’t need and using them sometimes confuses what is “latest”. This location also backed up by 3-2-1 backup regime.
