Scrivener final release candidate (beta 6) now available

Hello all,

I have just uploaded Scrivener beta 6. This is the final release candidate. The help file is complete, the tutorial has been edited, forms have been sent off and so now all that remains is one or two very minor tweaks, confirmation from eSellerate that the store is ready to be opened, and amending the Help file after willing beta-testers have proof-read it.

Of course, if you have beta 5, you can just update from within the application itself. However, to get the updated tutorial file (for those of you who would like to proof-read it), you will need to download the DMG above.

As usual, the full list of changes can be found below. Please do look at the help file and let me know about any typos or mistakes I have made - a lot of it was written whilst I was tired, it was a boring job, and I haven’t re-read it myself, so there are bound to be errors in there. Thank you!

Obviously, report any bugs you find, too. I most certainly will not be adding any new features before 1.0 now, but any bugs that arise I will fix ASAP - as always.

Changes to Beta 6

• Fixed bug whereby end of last footnote could be chopped off when using Export Files…
• Fixed bug where “drop on” outline would not disappear from the binder when dragging a selection of text to the root of the binder.
• Fixed bug whereby underline did not always show the actual focused editor pane when splitting the window.
• Date in inspector now fits the width automatically, so that if the inspector is wider, more of the date will fit on…
• Fixed bug in auto-generate synopsis (in inspector) whereby if index card was empty, the new synopsis would use a Helvetica 12-point font instead of the font set via Preferences.
• Fixed minor glitch whereby typing “<–” or “–>” with “smart symbols” turned on did not do anything if “smart hyphens” was also turned on (these character sequences should be turned into arrow symbols when “smart symbols” is switched on in Preferences).
• Fixed bug whereby double-clicking on a file in the Finder to launch Scrivener would open not only that file but also all recent projects. Now only the double-clicked file is opened in this situation.
• “Set Selection as Title”, “Split with Selection as Title” and RTF text drag and drop limit title lengths to 100 characters rather than 50 characters.
• Automatic synopses now take first 500 characters of text rather than first 100 characters.
• Fixed bug whereby a table would get messed up if you tried to insert a Scrivener Link into it.
• Adding a new folder when the Draft or Research folder is selected now makes the newly created folder a child of the Draft or Research - when normal folders are selected, the new folder will become a sibling.
• Fixed bug whereby Keywords HUD size was not remembered.
• Fixed bug whereby split button image in header bar would go out of sync with its actual action when using a combination of the split button and View > Layout > No Split.
• Last inspector width is now saved between sessions.
• Hopefully fixed a bug where the sizes of elements in the inspector could get messed up on some occasions so that they overlapped one another (which would require you to close and reopen the project to fix it). Still on the lookout for this, though, as I’m not 100% sure that the fix will solve all circumstances.
• Selecting multiple documents in the binder now displays them as index cards on the corkboard in the focussed document, so that you can view arbitrary index cards. Note that the order is still fixed by the binder order and that this only works in corkboard view at the moment - you cannot choose to view arbitrary documents in the outliner, mainly because that is a little more complicated.
• Added Project Notepad panel (available via Window menu) - for those who want to make global notes.
• Fixed cut-off text in Export Files sheet.
• Clicking on the “…” button above the index card in the synopsis now uses selected text if there is a selection; if there is no selection, it acts as it did before (using the first few lines of the text as the synopsis).
• Tooltips in search results table now shows path of the document rather than the synopsis.
• Dragging URLs into the binder now convert them to text documents if “Convert WebArchives to text” is selected in import preferences.
• Added “Swap Documents and Close Split” (alt-cmd-’)to View > Layout menu, so that you can now close the split and keep the focus on the secondary (top or right) document.
• Fixed bug whereby text groups did not get printed when printing an Edit Scrivenings session via File > Print.
• Added “Binder Affects…” submenu to View menu and Binder contextual menu. Here you can select whether the binder should affect only the current editor (the one that last had the keyboard focus) or only the bottom/left or top/right editor. This way, in conjunction with “Selection Affects Alternate Editor”, you can set up Scrivener to work just like a traditional three-pane outliner, should you wish. And you can also set it up so that you have one editor set to have one document in it while you browse through other documents in the other editor.
• Fixed: when editing the outliner, after editing an item and then double-clicking another item to edit, the auto-save would previously cause editing to end.
• Added “Preserve Formatting” checkbox to outliner view.
• Fixed bug whereby having an annotation at the end of a document in conjunction with “Remove Annotations” switched on in Export Draft could lead to there being no space placed between the documents in a merged (exported) draft.
• Tweaked Export Draft so that if synopsis is exported without notes and text, the “Synopsis” subtitle is not added, so that generated printed outlines is now a little neater.

You may not think it’s a big change but the ability to find, select and display multiple cards makes a HUGE difference to me. It works beautifully and feels like I’m using real cards again.Being able to display cards from anywhere and then lock the pane is just bril.

And my favorite is the new Binder Affects choices. At last, no more losing the document in the top pane because I wasn’t careful about which pane I was in when I clicked on the binder. That happend to me all the time and I just couldn’t make myself stop and think about where I was before I clicked on a different document. Thanks so much for making this a non-issue.

Hi,

I updated Scrivener automatically when I started it today. Then I read that I have to download the DMG to have the new help file and the new tutorial. I did it. After dragging the app to the app folder I double clicked on the tutorial which causes a crash.

Scrivener starts fine with my last rather complex project opened. When I open the tutorial with File --> Open I get the intended error that the tutorial is read only. After dragging the tutorial to the desktop I can open it with double click or via File menu.

I only report this crash because there may be a problem when opening read only files causing a crash rather than the intended warning.

The automatic upgrade notification process from Scrivener b5 to Scrivener b6 (including install and relaunch) worked perfectly. I booted Scrivener 5, got the notification and off it all went on its own - perfect install.

Love the Project Notepad!

LOVE this one: Adding a new folder when the Draft or Research folder is selected now makes the newly created folder a child of the Draft or Research - when normal folders are selected, the new folder will become a sibling.

I love that you make this distinction between top level folders and the behavior when creating a new one and subfolders. Very nice.

Very nice: Last inspector width is now saved between sessions.

I plan to have a good look at the help files et al later today. Congrats on being so close to release!

• the search for highlights feature and the ability to name highlights (on a project base!) seems an outstanding feature, might be sensible to include a sentence about that in the final part Step 16?

The tutorial is really only a rough guide and I want it to be as quick as possible. Given that there are similar search features in many apps, I figured full coverage would be better left to the Help file.

• highlights are reliable de-highlighted with cmd-shift-h while clicking on the exact highlight (cmd-ctrl-#1-5) does either confirm the existing highlight or change to another highlight since beta 5. This was a great improvement, maybe worth a mention.

Again, I think this is something better left for the user to discover. The tutorial is really just for the big stuff - a so-called “quickstart”.

• some Scrivener preferences have to be set to default, maybe you can include an additional Readme about the necessary preferences? I had to check all that to get Scrivener work as you announce in the tutorial.

The tutorial sort of assumes that it is the first thing you do with Scrivener, so that your preferences are still set to default. I have added a note to Step 1 that this is the assumption, though.

Typo is in the text for the folder ‘Part 2:Organisation’ where it tells you to convert the folder to a file it says: ‘…then go to Edit>Convert to File in the menu at the top of the screen’.

It should say: ‘…then go to Document>Convert to File in the menu at the top of the screen’.

Lovely. The auto-updater worked perfectly, and the level of polish is indeed impressive. I’m particularly excited about the new corkboard binder-selection behavior, which I’m already finding really useful. Looking forward to the commercial launch.

[A tip for those who want to reorder disparate collections of cards - select the mixed set in the corkboard view, then drag the cards one at a time from the corkboard into their new locations in the binder column. The corkboard won’t update during this process, but it works.]
