Is there any sort of manual for Scrivener for iOS? I find the comprehensive one for the Mac incredibly useful. I’m writing the same book between both, and I’m stymied by the way the iOS version outputs a compiled draft that doesn’t look anything like the Mac version’s draft, and I can’t figure out how to configure the software to address the issues.
I guess I don’t understand why the “Manuscript (Times)” compiles from the Mac and iPad versions of Scrivener would produce such radically different output.
Sure, I get that. I’m just trying to figure out if it’s possible to get the compiler output on iOS to match the output from the Mac, and I was thinking a proper manual might help me figure that out.
The Compile function in iOS Scrivener is completely separate from the Mac OS Compile command. See the “Exporting and Printing” section of the iOS Scrivener tutorial project for more information.
The iOS compiler is not as capable as the Mac compiler, but you can get it to be better than the included formats. I don’t know why iOS Scrivener doesn’t have a separate manual, nor why it’s so danged hard to find the iOS compiler documentation, but here’s how to get to it:
Bring up the compile dialog, and tap on the arrow on the Appearance row.
Tap the “Edit” buton at the top of the Appearance dialog.
If you have a custom format already, tap on the “i” icon to its right. Otherwise, select one of the built-in formats, duplicate it, then tap the “i” icon next to the duplicate.
You’re now in the Appearance Editor dialog. Tap the “?” icon in the top right corner of the dialog.
At last you’re at Appearances Help. What I did was tap “Copy All” in the upper right corner, and then exit from compile altogether. I then created a new document in my Research folder and pasted all the info from Appearances Help into it.
This Appearances Help will tell you everything there is to know about how to create or modify Appearances, the iOS equivalent to compile formats. It’s not very capable compared to Mac. I’ve used it to produce a draft to send to an editor or a beta reader, but I wouldn’t use it for final output. The best I could do is produce something for final formatting in, say, Pages or Word.
