Scrivener Mac / Scrivener Window 11?

I have Scrivener for Windows 11, I am thinking about buying a Mac because I cannot stand Windows OneDrive, the worst feature Windows forces one to have, whether they don’t install or it is installed.

My questions are

  1. Does Mac force you to install any sort of OneDrive feature?
  2. How easy is the transition from Scrivener Windows to Scrivener Mac?
  3. Which is more fully developed Scrivener Mac or Windows?
  4. ROI, Which is more cost effective?

Thank you ahead of time.
John

Amber, I bought Mastering Scrivener for Windows and Mastering Windows Themes. So far the book is excellent.

Mac OS will install iCloud. You can disable it, but you’ll definitely want to be attentive to the relevant options when you’re setting up a new machine.

Scrivener Mac came first, and is still maintained by the original developer of Scrivener. We try to maintain feature parity between the two, but Scrivener Mac uses a lot of system libraries that simply aren’t available on the Windows platform. That makes some features a heavier lift on the Windows side, and therefore a little harder/slower to implement.

As I bounce between MacOS, Windows 10, iPad, and iPhones all using the relavent Scrivener apps, I can say that other than the names of the modifer keys and a few of the more rarely used keyboard shortcuts are different. (For rule-of-thumb reference, Mac - Windows: Shift - Shift, Control (CTRL) - Control (CTRL), Option - Alt, Command - Windows Key)

As far as the daily-driver experience, I find that MacOS is a touch smoother and faster than Windows, but both MacOS and Windows are more robust than the mobile versions.

Your learning curve to keep using Scrivener will be limited to the new look & feel of the MacOS UX and the different labled modifer keys. Should be quite easily managed.

If you have any specific questions, let me know and I’ll do my best to answer specifically.

Thank you, i I will do more research

Why don’t you just uninstall OneDrive, and use a cloud service of your choosing?

Wow, the author himself, thank you for your reply.

I purchased your Mastering Scrivener (Kindle and Paperback), also Mastering Scrivener Themes (Kindle). When will there be a Paperback version?

Now to answer your question, I uninstalled OneDrive. The problem is that the OneDrive folder is still in the path for example “C:\Users\myema\OneDrive” for the Desktop and Scrivener Folder, and, the OneDrive Folder is all over the place all over the place, including a portable Hard Drive, “USB-HDD (D:) > ONE DRIVE FILES AS OF 03-08-2024”…

My Scrivener Backup is on the 10T Portable HHD, but gosh darn it, OneDrive when it is installed put tons of Folders with a path that includes a OneDrive Folder.

I have tried to delete any OneDrive Folder which turns up in the strangest places on either drives “C:” and “D:”.

All of this to say the reason I thought of going to MacOS is so I don’t have to deal with OneDrive.

As for purchasing a cloud service, I have over 4T of (PDF) files on the portable hard, the cost is too expensive over the long term (and the reason I originally purchased a 10T portable drive).

I prefer to have all my files on a local drive.

Humorously speaking, I’m almost at the point of having nightmares of OneDrive closing in on me, and surrounded by OneDrive.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post

I look forward to seeing a Paperback version of “Mastering Scrivener Themes”

Respectfully,

John Hayes

Thanks!

I was thinking a paperback for Mastering Scrivener Themes would not allow copying code from, and thus would not be very convenient. But paperbacks are on the to do list. Somewhere.

At the moment, I’m in the trenches of writing a companion book to Mastering Scrivener, called “Troubleshooting Scrivener”, during NaNoWriMo. That will certainly be a tome of a paperback. Out probably early next year

As to your OneDrive tragedy, I’m sorry to hear of the trouble after uninstalling.

This seems a logical step, but make sure to follow a 3,2,1 Backup strategy.
