Scrivener needs Force Quit, over and over

Scrivener needs a Force Quit, over and over. I Have restarted the computer over and over too. Scrivener restarts but also opens projects i have closed (but I do always have a few open, because i’m using them). One of the projects, it asks if it should Copy or Continue, i choose Continue. Then it rebuilds slowly, then, oh no, have to Force Quit again. Macbook Air 15.3.2. Scrivener 3.4
LATER I thought this was ok by opening the Project from my Dropbox folder but OH NO once more Scrivener stopped responding, little circles went round, and whole Force Quit rigmarole began again. Now i can’t open any project. I have Scrivener open somehow but going to “open recent” from here = no response.

EDIT I just might be ok, as i tried again to open recent project, this time it allowed me to “make a copy” of what might have been the troublesome project. BUT please tell me why this happened and how to make sure it doesnt happen again Thanks

Please update to macOS 15.7.45 and Scrivener 3.5.2.

So is this definitely because of the version of Scrivener i’m using? The update window says it’ll fix things that i don’t come across

Nothing is definite in these situations, but by moving to the latest versions it rules out some things.

It could just as easily be an issue with your hardware, other macOS issues. Impossible to tell from here.

And from reading other posts here it seems that something (macOS? flakiness) causes the Scrivener Preferences file to cause Scrivener stability issues.

ok thanks, i will do so.

I always recommend, if you are having trouble, to quit relying on the Recents menu to open your problem project. Get to the Finder and located your actual .scriv project file and open it from there.

Might not help in this situation, but many are the headaches people have had when something did not go right, because they relied solely on the MacOS Recents Menu for getting at their stuff.

Useful to know. Thank you

Another useful trick: Hold down the Shift key before opening the app. This should prevent it from automatically reopening a troubled projects that was open when you last quit Scrivener.

(This is a Mac-OS feature, so should work in any app.)
