Hello,
I too have had similar issues using Big Sur and Scrivener 3.2.1. It was working fine until today, when it simply wouldn’t open. I’ve downloaded the ‘test build’ below, and can now open my files. I have one comment and one query:
If it’s of any interest, the failure to open was on my new iMac; when I tried on my MacBook Pro (also Big Sur and Scrivener 3.2.1), the files opened without a problem (bar the warning that they were open elsewhere).
2.Should I delete the version of Scrivener I have in my Applications File and replace it with the test-build downloaded from Dropbox?
Thanks,
A.
The known bugs in Scrivener 3.2.1 are fixed in the linked test build. Think of it as a beta release of Scrivener 3.2.2. As such yes, you can simply place it in your Applications folder like any other application.
I had this same problem. Last night, with Scrivener open and my latest project-- 50,404 words-- on screen, I got the dialog box announcing an updated version, and did I want to update now? I clicked ‘Yes’, since I had been putting it off for a while. After the update, Scrivener crashed and wouldn’t reopen. I tried re-downloading and installing that update; same result. I’m running OS X 10.15.7, Catalina. Then I tried the “test” version from Dropbox that Keith linked to below (above?) and that did open, and my work was there-- Thank God! But now there were two versions of Scrivener on my dock.
My questions are: should I uninstall one version, and if so, how do I do that? Is the “update” 3.2.1 really this buggy, that all these people are having such issues with it? And what is the true future of Tesla stock-- should I buy more now, or wait?
(I threw that one in for any possible time travelers reading this.) Thanks so much.
(EDIT) And, once again, I posted too soon-- I see my questions (one or two anyway) answered above. Thanks! And now, if you time-travelers can just PM me…
I am also having crash problems. At first it was any time I hit the back space or when I tried to delete a blank line after a bulleted list, it crashed the program every time. I downloaded the test build and it worked for those 2 problems, but now every time I scroll across a word to delete it, the program crashes. I am on Big Sur 11.0.1, Help! I’m about to just use Pages until someone can get these bugs fixed, and Apple doesn’t seem too concerned that Big Sur has bugs in nearly every application.
Yes, I indicated that in my post… unless you are referencing a newer test build. I did, and it helped a couple of issues, but selecting text and hitting delete causes it to crash. Any other suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you.
BTW… As of now, the program is unusable, every time I hit the back button to edit a word, it crashes. I’ve moved to Pages until something gets fixed out of fear of losing my document.
My problem is similar, perhaps worse. Everytime I try to open Scrivener it “unexpectedly crashes.” Support sent me the text build – should I install it? If so, on top of the existing version? Or do I uninstall Scrivener first. I am not a computer tech person and I am worried about compounding the problem by trying the test build. I am waiting for followup from support but I am extremely anxious about the fate of my manuscript.
Also, now the project I am working on is completely inaccessible. Someone mentioned extracting work from Scrivener. How? And then could I open it in Word or something else?
I had the same issue. Scrivener repeatedly crashed trying to open my main file after new Mac OS update install. Emailed support but haven’t had a response all day. Spent the last 8 hours trying to fix it with no luck. Finally tried the forums, which is new to me. And the posted patch download worked - at least for now - and let me open the file. Never been happier to see my work. Now, what I don’t know is if this fix is permanent? Or if I logoff/shutdown will I need to download it again?
The link to the test build posted here worked and solved my problem. Support had also sent the link, but somehow it had gotten corrupted and wouldn’t open. Perhaps you can’t imagine the relieve when I tried the one from Forum and worked! Glad to be part of the Scrivener community.
I am still hoping to get a response from a Scrivener tech person. Be cautious, I was having a couple of main problems that the patch fixed, but then the backspace / delete crash started happening. I could open the document, which is how I copied it and pasted it in Pages so I can at least continue to work on my project, but the patch apparently didn’t fix everything. Hoping Scrivener is faster than Apple with an update!
If the test build works for you, it should continue to work.
If it doesn’t, and you haven’t already, please open a support ticket. Include your crash report if there is one, and let us know that you are using the test build. literatureandlatte.com/contact-us
(If you’ve opened a support ticket already, there’s no need to create a second one and doing so will just confuse matters.)
I am also having this problem. Deleting text crashes the program. Also becoming quickly unusable. If I highlight a line or paragraph and hit delete it crashes immediately. If I just start deleting words, I can get through a few before it crashes.
I tried downloading the test file above for ScrivTest-251120.zip and installed. but same issue.
Hitting the backspace/delete key causes it to crash. Highlighting a block of text then deleting it by hitting return also causes it to crash. Downloaded the build linked above, but it hasn’t made any difference.
One temporary solution to the problem that worked for me was to disable page view when I needed to delete something that would otherwise cause a crash (View > Text Editing > Hide Page View).
If you still experience crashes after installing it, please open a support ticket with a copy of the crash report: literatureandlatte.com/contact-us
We expect to release Scrivener 3.2.2 in the next week or so. It is based on the above test build and fixes all known crashes in Scrivener 3.2.1. Which means that if you have a crash that it doesn’t fix, you should let us know.
