Session word count randomly changes upon opening [Bug?]

I have an issue where the session word count will change to something incorrect when I open the program. For a time it would actually show insane negatives like -1000something and I would be confused, wondering what I could have possibly deleted. Then the issue stopped and now it’s back but showing strange positives. This morning I opened Scrivener and the session word count was in the 800s, even though I hadn’t written today. Now after writing a bit and my computer restarting due to a blue screen, it shows 913 out of 500 words. Again, I haven’t typed 913 words.

I don’t know what’s happening, but when this occurs I have to reset the session target back to 0 before continuing or else my numbers will be thrown off. The writing history is already inaccurate on the days this occurs. The actual document word count appears to be normal, however.

I am on version 3.1.6.0.

Hi.

Is your project stored on a cloud?
(It shouldn’t. It can be mirrored on a cloud, but you need your cloud service to be set so that you keep the whole also stored locally, on your HD. Scrivener needs this.)
. . . . . . . . .

Session or global word count and writing history are not functionnally related, iirc. None of them fetch data from another.
. . . . . . . . .

Another thing that can give the impression that the word count changes for no reason is if you’ve set it to be dependant of the compiler’s content to compile. But it doesn’t seem to be so, in your case, as per your description. (It wouldn’t change between a quit and a project reopen.)
. . . . . . . . .

You may also want to make sure that all of your documents that are intended as publishable content are actually inside your draft / manuscript folder (in the binder).

Hi,

It is not. I have it on my local hard drive and a backup goes to another folder on my hard drive as well. Everything in my project is in one place (a binder structure I have set up outside the draft folder, I use Scriv for organizing and writing fanfiction) and it gets the correct word count 99% of the time, this is just the 1% of the time it doesn’t seem to. I also noticed just now when I reopened it that it’s giving the wrong word counts on my documents. The one I’ve been working on is around 1949 words, but it’s saying it’s got 979. When I highlight everything, it shows the correct word count but out of 979.

One more thing, somehow the session count is affecting the writing history when this happens; the random numbers that appear in my session count are actually reflecting in the writing history. So if it gives me a negative for session count, I get a negative on my writing history.

Perhaps try this :

[Else, perhaps it is OneDrive messing things up without you knowing. If you go through your documents and see some are blank for no reason, that’d be OneDrive. It is very good at messing things up silently. (If you have blank documents, don’t panic. It can be fixed.)]

Looks like that fixed the document word count and the session word count; hopefully it will not happen again. Thanks!
