Several years ago I used Dragon Dictate running in Parallels on my Mac Mini for transcription of handwritten notes into my Scrivener project,… it worked reasonably well but was cumbersome. Today are there better ways to do this?

Do you mean transcribe audio files?

Dictation in iOS is much more accurate than on MacOS, but the buiult-in dictation on the Mac isn’t bad. Whisper from OpenAI is remarkably better.

ChatGPT says:

Whisper-based dictation is available for macOS through several applications that utilize OpenAI’s Whisper speech-to-text technology. Notable examples include:

  • • MacWhisper: This application allows you to transcribe audio files and offers system-wide dictation capabilities, effectively replacing Apple’s built-in dictation. It supports recording and transcribing audio directly on your Mac, ensuring that all data processing occurs locally for enhanced privacy. Features include support for multiple languages, audio playback synced to transcripts, and various export options such as .srt, .vtt, .csv, .docx, .pdf, markdown, and HTML. *
  • • Superwhisper: This application enables voice-to-text functionality across any app on your Mac. It offers meeting recording and transcription, unlimited use of small voice models, and custom prompt control. Superwhisper emphasizes data privacy by ensuring that all processing is done on-device. *
  • • Whisper Transcribe - Dictation: Available on the Mac App Store, this app allows you to transcribe live recordings, audio, or video files into text accurately and efficiently. It supports multiple languages and ensures data privacy by performing all processing locally on your device. *

These applications provide enhanced dictation functionalities on macOS by leveraging Whisper’s advanced speech recognition capabilities.
