Just updated my scrivener subscription on mhy Mac and stored the DMG file in a new Scrivener folder - so now I have 2 Scrivener apps (Scrivener snd Scrivener1) - wondered if there will be any confusion with where my projects get stored in future??
I’m not sure if I fully understand the question, but your projects will be stored where you create them, or in the folder you have moved them to.
Scrivener has little to say about where you store your projects.
You should be able to run both versions in parallel (at least in Windows they do).
Keep in mind, though, that project formats may not be interchangeable. You may need to upgrade your projects to use the latest version with them.
This is quite straightforward, just open an old project with the new version and it will be converted if needed.
Hope this helps!
Aah ok I get it - the ones in the old folder are stored with the old features and the new folder with the new features, so no question of synching - thanks.
Just to make sure this is all being done in the best way possible, the DMG file you refer to is an installer basically, it isn’t something you’re meant to keep forever, or make use of. I usually trash them after I install the software they contain. You’re free to keep them if you want, don’t get me wrong, but it’s like keeping installers after you’ve installed—it has nothing to do with the functioning of the software. Put them all in one folder, or different ones, it doesn’t matter.
The main thing though is that when you open that DMG, you follow the diagram in it and drag the Scrivener icon onto the Application icon to install it. Then when it is done copying, eject the DMG and launch Scrivener from Applications, maybe dragging it to your Dock first, so it’s easier to launch in the future.
Otherwise yes, none of this has anything at all to do with your projects. You can delete Scrivener entirely, for many years, and nothing will change about your projects (other than being unable to open them of course). Install it later, and they will be right where you left them.
Ohh thank you for that pro-tip!
(I’m a hoarder - IRL as well, sry - and always worry something will not work correctly so keep all the nuts and bolts together from when they were downloaded!) but got it! Yes now I see 2 Scriveners on my dock too… Even if Scirvener doesn’t get confused I sure might, so I better delete the old one.
As it happoens, this is my 2nd or 3rd update and previously I’d been overwriting the old folder - at those times I’d worry about the opposite problem, whether I was losing something by overwriting and wouldnt be able to tell until I needed the missing thing. So I thought I’d ask about it.
Now I get it - I see the projects are filed in their own spots where I chose to save them. And the new Scrivener goes right to where they are.
Thank you so much for clarifying - and so promptly!
Unless you’re doing it for a specific reason – like helping to support multiple versions – in my experience having multiple versions of Scrivener creates more problems than it solves.
Yes - I see that. Thanks.
For the cautious spirit in you: I usually keep a compressed version of the outgoing app until I am comfortable that all is well. It is as simple as (in Finder) control-clicking on the app file and choosing Compress from the contextual menu. This will make a zip file containing a copy of the app file — for safekeeping. You can then overwrite the current app with the new one. An additional virtue of this approach is that your old Dock alias to the app will now open the new app automatically. Once you are comfortable with the transition, you can toss the zip file out.
Great idea! I do see a lot of Zip files of old projects in my old folder - those maybe under previous versions of scrivener??..
Probably those are Scrivener’s automatic backups.
