Snapshots

Hello there

I am a new user and getting to know the Scrivener application. Very impressed so far.

Regarding snapshots, I see the various options under the Document->Snapshots menu but I cannot see how to snapshot ALL the text documents AND do it with a Title.

In my case, it would be snapshotting with title 60 chapter folders containing a total of 150 scene files. I would like to snapshot and title in this way because it will help me manage the project on a per-draft basis.

Am I missing something or does this feature not yet exist?

Thank you
mpuk

Hi,

You’re right, such a feature doesn’t exist. I was going to ask why you would want to assign the same snapshot title to all documents, but I assume you want to assign a title like “First Draft” or suchlike, is that right? All snapshots have a date associated with them automatically, though.

All the best,
Keith

Another method you might wish to employ is to simply duplicate the draft. Once done with a revision, select the Draft item in the Binder and press Cmd-D. A few moments later and you should have a full copy in the Binder. Call it “Second revision” or whatever, and then keep working away. The nice thing about this method is that it also preserves outline order, splitting, and merging, which snapshots don’t touch. They are a document level, rather than book level, form of preservation.

Hello again

KB, yes, I was imaginging assigning a literal tag title for snapshots of each draft revision and having it assigned to each document in the draft snapshot. That way, rather than trying to remember dates and times (which by the way is useful but not as useful as a literal tag; I think the date/time stamp should happen regardless) I could simply drag out previous draft revisions of any given document. Maybe it’s something you want to consider in the future? A function which performs a snapshot ALL and allows the user to assign a title.

AmberV, your solution works very well for my purposes, thank you! It will allow me to perform a manual Cmd-D ‘snapshot’ at each draft milestone, store these in an archive folder under Draft 1, Draft 2, etc, and then have immediate access to them. Further, it allows me to review, in split screen, a document from one draft against the same document from another draft. Even better! I’ll just have to make sure I don’t get confused what I’m looking at in top and bottom since the header only shows the document name, rather than showing containing_folder->document_name. (hint hint  )

Thank you both for your quick response. Scrivener just leaped over another one of my hurdles!

Cheers

Hi mpuk,

It’s certainly not a bad idea - it’s just something I hadn’t thought of, to be honest. I’ll add it to the list. If it doesn’t make it in for 2.0 (because of time), then I hope in a 2.x update (but prod me sometime next year after 2.0 comes out if it doesn’t make it in). 2.0 will make snapshots a lot more useful in general - for instance, by allowing you to view them in split screen.

All the best,
Keith

oooh - split screen snaps! Thats a good idea!
