After newly installing Scrivener and Grammarly Desktop app, spelling check and auto-correction do not work. I made Grammarly not work on Scrivener, but still, both functions do not work. I toggled Check Spelling While Typing a few times but it did not work. I double-checked the function in the Preference but it was of no use. Would you please guide me on how to make them work again?
Hello, I have the same problem. I uninstalled Grammarly desktop. I also tried uninstalling and installing Scrivener again, but it didn’t help. Have you found a solution?
I solved the problem. I followed this guide to uninstall Grammarly
At this point, the automatic correction only worked in Pages, while in all other programs, it did not. So I called Apple Customer Service. The problem was related to the user profile, so I created a new admin user and deleted the old one. The spell-check works again on Scrivener and all other programs.
Perhaps this will be useful to someone.
I renamed the post so people are more likely to find it in your situation.
I’ve uninstalled Grammarly as per the link above but Autocorrect still doesn’t work in Scrivener and I rely on it a lot! Not a happy bunny
So I’ve uninstalled Scrivener and reinstalled it but it still hasn’t solved my problem, auto-corrtect still isn’t working. When I uninstalled it, I just sent the application to the bin (emptied the bin) and, as far as I can tell, that should be enough but there are Scrivener files within Application Support. Do I need to delete those as well?
Went for it in the end and did a fresh install of Scrivener but still doesn’t correct spelling as I type. Don’t know what to do now.
Experiment with the settings, both in Scrivener and in System Preferences.
I’ve tried everything. Even reinstalled Grammarly and dowloaded an uninstaller to uninstall it. Still no joy.
To the circle of suffering from the temporary loss of auto-correct,
I’ve contacted Grammarly and got the following information to re-activate the default auto-correct function. I have not done it myself as I am sharing this information as soon as I woke up; however, it seems to work.
Please follow these steps to turn on the default spellchecker on your computer:
- Open the Terminal:
- Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
- Click Go.
- Select Utilities.
- Double-click Terminal.
- Paste the following command into the Terminal window, then press Enter:
defaults write -g NSAllowContinuousSpellChecking -bool true
- Restart your computer.
Good luck!
@buddhi You’re an absolute star!
Thank you so much.
Thanks so much for your post. I had Grammarly installed and was going crazy trying to fix spelling autocorrect. I followed your explicit instructions and now spellchecker is working again!
Another reason not to use Grammarly in the first place.
(In addition to the fact that it’s lousy at grammar, like all grammar checkers.)
Well it’s happened again. Autocorrect isn’t working. I performed the tasks above which worked perfectly the last time, but hasn’t this time.
One thing to note. It still works in Notes soo it doesn’t appear to be a MacOS thing. It was working fine in scrivener a couple of days ago.
Ok, this has taken an odd turn.
I’ve been working on the same project for some time now but I opened another project this morning and autocorrect is working fine. Went back to the other project and autocorrect still doesn’t work. How is that possible? I’ve checked project settings for each but can’t see any differences.
Notes uses a different text editor than Scrivener does. Text Edit is the one to check to see if it’s a macOS thing or a Scrivener-specific thing.
