Split Current Item

I would like a feature that lets you split the item being edited, at the cursor position, into the original item with all the text that came before the cursor, and a new item with all the text that came after.

I know you can do this with cut and paste, but it’s several steps and this is something I do fairly often. It would be nice if there was a shortcut.

Geez, what is it with this program? Half the time I figure out some new feature I’d like, I end up figuring out that the feature is hidden somewhere in there after all.

In other words, I found the “split” command.

Can i change my wish to “put SPLIT into the EDIT menu” ?

I’d always assumed that the logic was that “Split / Merge” worked ON the document(s) or files, while the Edit menu deals with things that happen WITHIN the document. But perhaps I’m wrong.

Martin.

Glad you found it!

And yes, this is in the “Documents” menu because it operates at the document level, creating a new document. The “Edit” menu operates on the current text/item. So Split belongs with Merge, Duplicate and so on.

All the best,
Keith

And just to add an aside, if you think something should happen, like being able to split a document into two pieces, but not being able to find the command for it, the Help menu search box can be great for this. So long as your idea for the terminology is close enough to the software’s terminology you can dig out lost menu commands rather quickly with it. In this case you would have come up with “Split > At Selection” which once you highlight will show the menu position and activate the command for you.

The keyboard shortcut (if there is one) is listed right next to the menu item, so if you need to use that function repeatedly, you can just take note of the key combination and use it instead of navigating the menus.
