Standardizing Formatting throughout a document

I’m trying to figure out how to set up formatting for all my future writing. I think I’ll get it eventually, but I can’t see a path to going back to projects in progress and applying my formatting choices to them after the fact. I can do one chapter or section at a time, but not the whole document. Is there a way to do that? I tried a search on “formatting”, but there were a lot of hits and no easy way to see if any of them addressed my particular issue.

In the Scrivener manual, §15.7.5 of Chapter Fifteen is titled “Resetting Formatting.” It has details on the steps you can use to reformat existing text to the global defaults.

That command is Documents > Convert > Text to Default Formatting. It can be destructive, so I recommend using File > Back Up > Back Up Now or File > Back Up > Back Up To… to create a backup of the project before applying that conversion tool.

That way, if it has unintended changes, you can restore from the backup.

Other than the official resources, above, here is a good thread on it:

I would encourage any further follow-up questions to be posted there, if the discussion does not already cover it, so as to keep it all in one place.

There is also the knowledge base.
