Stop Folder Expanding When Adding A File (By Drag & Drop)

Hi, all – Is there any way to stop Scrivener from expanding a folder every time I drag&drop a file into it?

I keep having to close the folder so I can see the files I want to drag & drop next. With 200 files going into 12 folders, it’s taking a wildly long time. And yes, I’ve tried dragging from the binder into the Outline in the editor, but it pops the outline open there, too. When a folder with dozens of files expands, even in the Outline, I can’t see all the folders anymore.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Just found a funky way to make this work, in case anyone wants to do the same thing:

  1. Label all the folders in the Binder you want to put stuff into: Folders
  2. Search the whole project for Labels with the name Folders
  3. Highlight that entire collection of results so they appear on the right in the editor.
  4. Change the editor view to Outline.
  5. Control-click on the icon in the editor to the left of the title and Lock In Place these folders.

You can now drag any files from the binder directly into the folders in the editor without them expanding.

As expected, Scrivener actually can do anything you imagine.

A much simpler way is to turn the behaviour off. Here’s how:

  1. Open Scrivener’s Preferences (Scrivener menu > Preferences…).

  2. Select the “Behaviors” pane.

  3. From the list on the left, select “Dragging & Dropping”.

  4. Tick “Collapse auto-expanded outline items after drag and drop”.

Hope that helps.

All the best,
Keith

Thanks, Keith!
