Strange autocorrect issue on surname "Wen"

I’m on Scrivener version 3.3.3 on Mac OS 14.4.1.

I use Scrivener to write, among other things, about people whose family name is Wen. But because they are Chinese, this name comes first - so one name is, for example, Wen Qing. Which means that if I start a sentence with their name, I am starting it with the word Wen, which is where this problem happens.

Scrivener is REALLY REALLY sure that I mean When. All the Chinese names I use regularly, I highlight and tell it to learn the spelling, including Wen. But sometimes (not every time, but often) when I write a sentence that starts with Wen, as soon as I end the sentence and hit space bar after the period, it changes the Wen to When. I fix it, and the next time I hit the space bar during the next sentence it immediately does it again. I fix it again, it keeps doing it - the only way I’ve found to keep it fixed is to write the whole paragraph and only then go back and fix any Whens, when I won’t be hitting space bar during that paragraph anymore. (And if I later edit the paragraph, it starts back up.)

It does not matter whether I fix it manually, by hitting command-z, or by hitting the little revert button that pops up when I hover over the thing Scrivener just changed. All three it ignores as soon as I hit space bar again.

I have gone so far as to go into my text replacement settings on my Mac and set up a text replacement from “Wen” to “Wen”. This does nothing. Of course, I can’t set one from “When” to “Wen” because I also start sentences with When!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t even do this every time I start a sentence with Wen. I honestly haven’t been able to figure out the pattern of when it does and doesn’t do it. It doesn’t matter what the given name after Wen is (it will do it sometimes and not do it other times on every name I’ve tried). It’s not only when it’s at the start of a paragraph. Sentence length doesn’t seem to matter. The only constant is that it only happens when the name is at the start of a sentence. If anyone can think of other variables to try please let me know.

Theoretically, the word would change when the system checker interprets the clause such that “When” makes sense at the start; but the system grammar checker also regularly thinks “to” should be “too” or so on, so it’s often not as smart as would be helpful.

Scrivener isn’t doing anything itself here other than enabling or disabling the system auto-correct tool, so it should work to simply disable Correct spelling errors as you type under the Corrections pane of Scrivener ▸ Settings.

Alternatively, if you want the auto-correction on in other projects, you could disable Edit ▸ Spelling and Grammar ▸ Check Spelling While Typing just for this particular project, which should prevent the autocorrection from running there. You can choose Check Document Now or Show Spelling and Grammar from that same menu at any time to review your work without triggering the auto-correction.

I have the same challenge with a character named Floors, which is pronounced differently to the English word. Even Grammarly drives me crazy with its correction suggestions. Adding the word to personal dictionaries has no effect on interpretation of grammar.
Thankfully, funky names like Flex-⁠ze or uConnect2 render no problems whatsoever.
