I want to have a Chapter title (Chapter Number) and a subtitle, which is metadata. I can get all that to work, but I want to format the subtitle differently from the Title, and I can’t get that to work. (Apparently in this new community bulletin board, I can’t share the result as a jpg)
Put <$title> or Chapter <$n> in the layout Prefix and <$custom:subtitle> in the Suffix (where subtitle is the name of your subtitle field). Format them separately by clicking on them separately in the Formatting pane.

The main trick to be aware of with the Title Prefix/Suffix fields is that if you want separate paragraph formatting then you need to insert a paragraph break into the field (either at the end or beginning, respectively). Once you do that you can format the subtitle as a completely separate paragraph in the main Formatting tab. If they are on the same line you can still change their formatting independently, but since they are in the same paragraph they will share alignment settings and so forth.
