[SUGGESTION:4434] Em dash / Horizontal bar

Hi there!

Didn’t find anything about this in the forum, sorry if there’s a topic already about it.

The thing is that I was working with em dashes (replacing them authomatically when writing --) but I discovered there’s a problem when working with justified text.

I think (correct me if I’m wrong) english text aren’t usually justified and you don’t use dashes for conversations in novels (you use “” for that). But spanish texts are ALWAYS justified and conversations go with long dashes. The problem with the em dash is that it doesn’t stay correctly with the text as it should.

Happens the same with Word (horizontal bar must be used instead of the em dash).

As I don’t know how to correctly explain myself, I’m attaching a couple of pics as example.

This is the (wrong) result of using the em dashes. And here is how it should be.

I fixed it by manually adding myself the substitution, so now when writing – instead of the em dash it changes into an horizontal bar.

Just wanted to let you know, in case someone has the same problem as me (I was going crazy until I found an article about em dashes and horizontal bar difference when working in text editors), and it would be perfect if you could add an option to fix this.

The same way there’s the «Replace double hyphens with em dashes», if you could add an «Replace double hyphens with horizontal bar», it would help big time.

Your pictures are not showing up.

Can you see them now?

Only the first.

Mark

I still can’t see either of them.

Weird, because I can see all 4.

That was from earlier, it must have been resolved now.

Nope, didn’t change anything since the first comment.

It’s weird, when devinganger said he couldn’t see the pics, I checked the post with another browser (without login in) and I couldn’t see them either. So I fixed the issue (or tried XD), checked it again and thought it was everything ok since I could see all 4 with no problem.

But xiamenese only sees one of them and devinganger still can’t see any LOLOL

Does somebody know what’s happening? Don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or what’s up :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

I can see both of them. Using Google Chrome Version 80.0.3987.149 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro N 64-bit.

I can see them now. Some sort of system glitch?

I have added this to our feature request list. It makes sense and is a nice addition. I cannot promise that it will be added in the next couple of releases, but we will consider adding it. Glad you have found a working workaround at the moment.

Could be, It’s ok as long as you can see them =)

That’s nice.

In the meantime, I hope for this topic to be helpful for those who write with justified text and had this same problem ^^

Note that in North America em dashes are sometimes used at the end of dialogue to represent an interruption or other sudden break in conversation. (But you’re right that they are not used in place of quotation marks.)
