Switching away from dropbox. What should I know?

Ive used dropbox for years, but lately they are more expensive then the rest of the cloud services out there, and they got rid of carousel, so my photos cannot be searched… Google photos is so much better. Google also now allows a lot of the same sharing options as dropbox does. So I decided to make the switch!

Then a small memory of something about Scrivener went off in my head. One of the apps I use had an issue with other cloud services… Scrivener. But I barely recall…

Is saving my scrivener files to somewhere other than dropbox still a bad thing?
I don’t use the iOS version. I pretty much just use my macbook for all editing. Once in a while I might open it on the iMac. I never use windows either.
I always make sure its closed or saved in one location before opening it elsewhere.

What exactly is the fear of saving it somehwere other than dropbox? What file wont sync properly? What can potentially happen? Is the issue cross operating systems only? Or even on one system?

There is a known issue with Google Drive specifically: it doesn’t necessarily upload changed files in chronological order. Combined with Scrivener’s frequent automatic saves, this can result in the project’s master index file being out of sync with the actual contents of the project, ultimately leading to lost work. We advise against Google Drive for that reason.

Regarding other services, any service that works like Dropbox does should be fine in theory. In practice, extra backups are never a bad idea. Best practices for using Scrivener with cloud services can be found here:

Recently, I’ve seen an unusual number of support tickets that seem to be related to misguided “smart sync” operations. A “smart” sync is one that downloads files to the local system only when needed. Depending on your usage and the speed of your internet connection, though, this can result in the content of a file not being available when Scrivener needs it. Most people find the resulting “blank” documents extremely disturbing.

I also especially recommend against iCloud’s “Optimize Mac Storage” feature. There have been a few cases where this feature “optimized” projects off to the cloud while Scrivener was actively using them, leading to save errors.

Two thoughts:

Since you largely only use 1 computer (the macbook), you can work on your projects (the .scriv “files” you open in Scrivener) in a non-icloud folder, and manually copy them to your google drive folder after you close Scrivener (and tell Scrivener to make automatic backups as zip files on closing your project at a location in your google drive sync folder).

You can move most of your files to google drive, but keep any active Scrivener projects in dropbox with a free account (depending on the file size of your active projects). That is if you’re ok with having more than 1 sync service. I use paid google docs with free dropbox for Scrivener and a few other very select things.

has the developer reached out to google with this bug and its issues?
now I’m i need to decide how I’m gonna deal with this…
i was so happy to move away from dropbox. I cancelled my plan. and now i cant add anymore stuff to dropbox because my box is beyond full. free is only 5GB, I have 300GB used

I think I will just sync the backups as suggested. So i work on a local copy and just let the zip backup go to google drive. If I ever switch to another computer, i’ll just copy the zip out of the clud and uncompress, correct?
And this is safer?

For smart sync I would just tell those people to set the scrivener file to be available always offline. you can do this on a file or folder by folder basis.

Corrupted projects, corrupted binders, empty binders, missing documents, blank documents, corrupted documents. Situations that force one to learn whether backup & restore procedures are up to snuff. :nerd_face:

It’s probably not so much a bug as a design choice. I would think Google’s sync is likely adequate for 95% of its use cases. When you’re uploading photos, it’s not really an issue if they update out of sequence. But a Scrivener project is an exception in that it requires higher fidelity then google was designed to provide.

Sure, of course. But people don’t usually check their settings until after the catastrophe. :exploding_head:

I used this method myself for a year or so prior to moving to DropBox. This should work fine for you.

Also, many companies, and Apple in particular, have a “father knows best” attitude toward their customers. It’s not unusual for upgrades to reset options to what the vendor thinks they should be, without necessarily telling the customer they’ve done so.

Honestly, my first suggestion would be that for 300 GB of data you probably want a real backup service, not a synchronization service. If you really do need for that much data to be accessible from multiple machines, external hard drives are inexpensive, portable, and more reliable than most internet connections.

So if google does not upload things in order… but it DOES upload every file changed correct?
So why does it need to be in order?
And is there a way we can tell the binder that its “out of order” by checking timestamps and modified dates and what not?..

I wish i understood this a bit better… I am a react developer. different world but same crap :smiley: yay.

If it updates out of order then older updates will replace newer updates. From user perspective this will look like lost work, missing text, etc. Issues like that are particularly insidious, because you might not notice it for days or weeks, and in that time might have subsequently modified the impacted docs—so checking modified dates won’t help.

Here’s some feedback about the syncing services I have experience with: For the last few years I concurrently used DropBox, OneDrive, and Google drive.

DropBox was very close to flawless. It predictably synchronized changes immediately.

OneDrive was very good, although now and then it sometimes seemed to fall asleep. But still, usually very good. If in the future I’m not able to use Dropbox, I would probably take a chance with my Scriv projects on OneDrive.

Google drive was by far the worst. I found it very unpredictable. Sometimes it would sync immediately, and sometimes it would not. I was never sure what it would do. Sometimes it would fall into a coma, and I would have to intervene by pausing and restarting syncing. Eventually, a month or so ago, I gave up on it. I would never ever trust a Scriv project on it.

Just my experience YMMV.

But how much space are you using for your active Scriv projects? I use paid OneDrive for all my non-Scriv PC data and free Dropbox for my active Scriv projects. Works great.

I would have to clear out dropbox to use it now…

Anyways I’m sticking with the sync backups only method. The problem is I started doing that after i think my project became messed up from google drive. Today Scrivener crashed on me after i closed a project so I am not sure why its crashing. Help!!
