Synchronizing Search Strings (again)

I’m having a problem with Scrivener freezing on opening the program–it gives the above message but I can’t open any files or get Scrivener to do anything. Forcing quit does work but when I open Scrivener again, it goes into the synchronizing search strings mode again (and stays there for at least fifteen minutes–at which point I force quit). The first time this happened was yesterday and then I importing some files into Scrivener.

This log is from the event yesterday–I don’t see any logs from today.

How big is the project this is happening to? If you force quit, the synchronising search strings will most certainly happen. I wouldn’t expect it to take 15 minutes, though, although if the project has gigabytes of text I suppose it could do, which is why I ask how big it is.

The crash you are experiencing is alarming, though. Could you please zip up the project file and send it to support AT literatureandlatte DOT com? Of course the contents will remain confidential and I’ll delete it after finding the problem. If it is a bug in Scrivener, I’ll personally send you a fix as soon as I’ve found it so that you can continue working even before it makes it to 1.12.

I am having the same issue - the synchronizing window will not go away for ages, and then hangs with the beach ball of death when it finally opens. Please help!

Try this:

Ctrl-click on the .scriv file in the Finder. Select “Show Package Contents”. Delete the ui.xml file from within the package (i.e. move it to the trash). Now see if when you open the project the synchronise goes through okay.

It seems to have worked itself out, and to be on the safe side, I deleted what looked like it might be an offending file. Thanks for the help, though.

i don’t know if this will add any information, but i have this problem from time to time; always on my powerbook. there have been times when the powerbook would, for no reason that i could see, just stop opening my book file for me at all. the worst of this was one incidence where it would actually cause the computer to reboot when i tried to open the file.

however, the SAME file–and i mean the exact, same file–would open with no problems on my imac. i’m not a computer person. don’t know anything about this stuff. i just use 'em. i “solve” this problem by syncing the “good” version of my file (ie, the one that will open) back from the imac to the powerbook. so far, this has solved the problem–whatever it might be–every time.

i put all my research for the book in the file, so it’s huge. i just looked, and it’s 292.4 mb. however, once i sync it back, it works just fine on both computers.

my powerbook has a 1 ghz powerpc g4 processor, with 1.25 gb ram. i don’t have the imac here to look, but it’s a lot more of what my teen-aged son calls “a beast.” it has over 2 ghz on the processor and 2 gb ram. i always just assumed that the faster processor had something to do with the fact that i never have this problem with it.

i hope this bit of info gives some clues as to the problem.
