I’ve got a new laptop but every time I exit Scrivenor I get a One Drive message saying that deleted documents are automatically deleted on One Drive. A version of my project then appears on the OneDrive Recycle Bin, even though I don’t want to send it to the recycle bin.
My project is still on Scrivenor
Not sure how to resolve this issue. Any help gratefully received. Thank you
I’m guessing this a OneDrive notification. It’s probably telling the truth.
For Scrivener, it’s important (as documented and discussed here often) and required that Scrivener project files be “local”. You need to tell OneDrive not to “help” you by removing files to save space.
My personal recommendation is you not put your Scrivener project files in OneDrive unless you have a specific need. Synced Onedrive files are not “backups” as you can see as they delete files.
Or, it could be your synced and zipped backup threshold doing its thing, pretty safe but not intended to be the be-all-and-end-all backup plan. (For example, once a week I also backup the latest backup elsewhere in two further off machine locations.)
In File > Options > Backup, you have options to keep all backups or have rotational backups, limited to between 3 and 25. So, in your case, it may be older backups dropping off when the set threshold is reached. That IS something Scrivener manages, i.e. Scrivener deletes the oldest synced backup, not Dropbox. And a responsible Cloud service reports what’s happening.
Check the tick box: ‘Use (append) date to backup file names’ and examine your backups to see that they’re running in newest to oldest order, as expected, and you’ll be on solid ground.
You can adjust this to your preference, dependant on your reasonable risk tolerance.
Hello and thank you so much for your help! I’ve made the changes in the backup area, and exited Scrivenor. So far no message from the Cloud. I will of course monitor this over the next few days. But the main thing is that my manuscript is still there! I will also save an off-line version for extra security.
Thank you for your help. As I have a new laptop, One Drive automatically saved everything, so I am not exactly sure how to tell One Drive not to save it to be honest.
