Syncthing? Any known issues?

I’m using Synching + Möbius Sync to sync Obsidian folders, and having read a comment here about Syncthing I decided to try it… on a spare tutorial project.

As far as I can tell on a cursory glance, it transferred well to a subfolder of Scrivener on my iPad. Scrivener asked to move the file out of its own subfolder (iPad/Scrivener/sync) into the main Scrivener folder to work with it—odd that), but there were no issues opening it.

I have enabled Staggered File Versioning, and if I try this for a real project, I will plan on extra backups.

I know there are known issues with Google Drive, etc. because they change files. As far as I can tell Syncthing is not going to be changing files, but does treat the package as a folder. “Syncthing sees into it and syncs the individual items inside, for better or worse.”

I suppose I will need to pause sync, at least on my MacBook when I have a project open. Besides that, are there any known or likely issues with syncthing?

I’m not aware of any issues with SyncThing. Just as a reminder, though, we advise against using any synchronization service as your sole backup for critical data.

Yes… and I like multiples of redundancies of kinds of backups ever since that time years ago when I was repairing my computer had wiped it… and I jostled my backup drive (which was still plugged in) and I heard my backup hard drive come to a screeching halt.

It’s hard to keep up with, but at least there’s hope that some measure of something will be restorable.

If you want to be thorough about it, I recently posted a checklist of things one can use to test a relatively unknown service (at least as far as feedback around here goes). This should go over most of the things that can theoretically cause issues with a service. I would say that if it can handle Obsidian’s constant and frequent auto-saving, it will handle Scrivener’s slightly more conservative auto-saving as well, but you’ll find that in the list of checks too.
