Tagging Sources for Research

I want to be able to select a large number of items and tag them in some way and have that tag show up in the inspector when I look at that item (and be separate from keywords). From what I see, the only way to do this is through labels. I am a little hesitant to go that route b/c I might end up with over 100 labels and it doesn’t seem like labels were designed for that, though I don’t see a problem with going that route. I just would like to see if people have other thoughts. Note: I really am looking for a process where I can do a MASS tagging as I want to avoid having to tag something each time I create an item; I would rather just move quickly and just select, tag, and be done.

TIA

What’s wrong with keywords?
As far as I know, you just described perfectly what they are intended for…

You could also use custom metadata, and build your tag list there. If your documents are only to wear a single tag, you’ll be able to use the dropdown list of your custom tags. Otherwise, make more that one custom metadata. (“Tag 1” , “Tag 2” etc…)

Some people here use emoticons for a reason and in a fashion that remotely resembles what you want. (Say in the note panel, in your case. – They are searchable.)
