I confess to being baffled by Scrivener’s spell-checking. I’m working on a science-fantasy novel replete with alien names and languages. I’m also using Grammarly Desktop for macOS.
When I enter a noun or a character’s name that flags a spelling error, it could presumably come from Scrivener, Grammarly, or macOS. I conscientiously right-click the offending word and add it to whatever spell-checker griped about it, but again and again, seemingly at random, I see those same words underlined as errors. Very often there won’t be a context menu option to add the word’s spelling. It just flags an error forever and ever.
What the heck is going on under the covers here? Is there a precedence hierarchy of spell-checkers? If so, my guess would be Scrivener, then Grammarly, and finally the operating system. If not, why not? I need to make this more predictable.
Scrivener for macOS uses Apple’s spellcheck tool, so those are one and the same. My guess is that you’re doing battle with the internal spellcheck tool and Grammarly. If you intend to keep with Grammarly, I would simply disable Scrivener’s spellcheck so you only have one to worry about. Edit → Spelling and Grammar, uncheck spelling/grammar options checked there. You’ll still be able to use the spellcheck tool later if desired, but this keeps Scrivener from checking as it goes so you don’t have dueling squiggles. There are some other options like autocomplete you can review via Scrivener → Settings → Corrections.
If you only have Grammarly running and it still isn’t remembering words you’ve added or giving you the option to do so, that would be a question for them. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to get a reply from their customer support, so good luck! Perhaps you are luckier than me.
On a related note, is anyone actively using Apple Intelligence Writing Tools (new to MacOS Sequoia) yet? How’s it working for you?
It doesn’t seem to be available in the UK yet, just the US. I’m currently using ProWritingAid Everywhere but was having a similar issue as the OP with squiggle-fights.
It isn’t available anywhere yet, officially. You have to install the beta version of 15.1 to then submit a request to be put on the testing list for it—but I wouldn’t bother yet, as it’s still a bit buggy and can even mess up your text under some conditions (undo/redo don’t always work right).
I’m hearing this second hand to be clear; I don’t know much about it, as I’ve had issues getting the beta installed from the EU, despite following guides on how to get around the blocks.
So far it hasn’t worked well for me in Scriviner. It’s different depending on the app you’re using and the beta version. It was causing Scriviner to crash for a while, but now it works, but doesn’t give any options to selectivly chose a correction. Basically it’s just accept or reject everything it wants to do. Which usually isn’t that bad, because it doesn’t seem to try to rewrite anything, just does basic proofreading. But still, not ideal.
Yeah, we’re working on making the integration less rough around the edges for the next update; whatever is functioning right now should be considered beta quality. I can’t say for sure how we’ll go with it, but it will probably be more like you’re expecting it to be, with a suggestion that you need to approve in some manner, rather than just mowing down whatever is there in front of it. That’s probably a better approach for… I don’t know, iMessage?
