Two projects: backup works in one and not the other?

Hi,
In one project I have a novel, almost completed. In the other project I have about 200 poems. When I close the poetry project, it runs a backup. When I close the novel, it does not. Why is that?

How do you know it doesn’t? Not a trick question. Sometimes backup runs so quickly the popup doesn’t display. I’m just wondering if you actually went to the backup folder to confirm.

Also, confirm your backup settings. My assumption is that you have File > Options > Backup > Back up on project close enabled. This is a global setting, so if it’s set that way on one project, it’ll be set that way for all projects.

Here are a couple other things to check, in Project > Project Settings > Backup:

  1. Confirm that Exclude from automatic backups is disabled for the problem project.
  2. Confirm that Use custom backup folder for this project is disabled for the problem project AND for the project where backups are working.

Hopefully something in those settings will reveal the problem.

Best,
Jim

Oh my, I think you’re right! It is backing up. I assumed with a 96,000 word document, I’d see it.
Thanks, Jim

I don’t know if this applies to your situation, but generally it’s the number of documents (not the word count) that will increase the duration of project operations like backups.

So, say your novel has 12 documents, each containing an 8k words chapter. And your poetry project has 200 documents, one for each poem, average 100 words each. I would expect the novel to backup faster.

It’s a bit counter intuitive, isn’t it. :face_with_monocle:

This definitely applies. I’m writing a poem a day, and each one is a new document, so I already have close to 200. My novel has 45 chapters, each a document. So you are right! Thanks for explaining this, Jim.
