Type formatting menu is grayed out in the Inspector

The text-formatting options in the Inspector are grayed out. I can’t change the font or the type size, etc. How do I get those options back (activate them)? I researched the issue here, and also used GitHub Co Pilot, but the solution still evades me.

They should be working, but it will depend entirely upon whether the cursor is in a spot that supports formatting to begin with. The areas where you can format are Document Notes (the lower half) and in the Bookmarks tab (which is really just a portal to the main document text of some other binder item).

Thank you, Amber. I’m in the lower section of the Inspector–the Notes section. For some of my Scrivener notebooks I can use all the formatting options in that section, but for other notebooks all the formatting options are grayed out. I’m attaching a partial screenshot of a notebook where all the options are grayed out (and my cursor is in the Inspector’s Notes panel).

And here’s a screenshot of a notebook for firefighter/disaster response resources in which the menu for the Inspector is active (NOT grayed out, as in the previous notebook). My cursor is in the same place as it was in the previous notebook (in the Notes section of the Inspector).

Thanks for the screenshots.

In the first one, it looks like you might actually be in the upper part, the Synopsis field. The tell is that the collapsible “Notes” header isn’t in view, and instead we can just see the item title on line one (in bold), and then below the rule (where the synopsis is), some more text. If that is where the cursor is, then that is why formatting is disabled.

Look to the very bottom of the split, do you see a collapsed “Notes” header there? It is possible to collapse either one of these so you can focus fully on them, which might be what happened.

That was the solution. I wasn’t paying attention to whether I could see the drop-down arrow beside “NOTES.” Thank you. You are fantastic.
