Unwanted font appears in lists

Using v3.4 on a MacBook. I have preferences set for Times New Roman in documents but any time I hit the Lists button to make a list, the font changes to Helvetica. It doesn’t matter which list style I select.

I’ve tried changing the first list item back to Times in the hope that the following items would continue with Times but that doesn’t work.

I’ve seen an old thread from 2008 which lead me to check in TextEdit and Helvetica seems to be the default setting there. I’ve tried setting up Times New Roman in TextEdit but it only works for the current document in TextEdit. It doesn’t even stick for successive list items.

Since Scrivener has been able to fix font settings for all new documents, I imagine you might have done the same for lists. Is there a setting I’ve missed somewhere?

Further news. I was going for another list today in Scrivener and to my surprise, it stayed in Times New Roman font. I tried to provoke the software by creating various lists in various ways, and at no time did Scrivener switch to Helvetica.
I dug into TextEdit again and repeated the tests. Today TextEdit still starts with Helvetica as the default but once changed to Times, it stays with Times.
Reflecting on what could have changed in the past few days, I recalled having updated the MacBook’s OS from Sonoma to Sequoia a couple of days ago. Did that change something? It remains to be seen.
