Updated Scrivener and previous file was replaced by tutorial

Hi there! I started a project last year in the spring of '23 and wasn’t able to pick it back up in earnest until this summer. I realized quickly that the app was outdated, it kept crashing, and updated to 3.3.5 on my mac.

When I went to open that project, I was prompted to save the document before even accessing it. Apparently this overwrote the file as it opened to the “Short Story Format” tutorial. I have been unable to access my previous work anywhere and I’m at a total loss given Scrivener is still fresh to me. I feel like a moron for not knowing better, but I’ve never had content replaced by a tutorial in any of my other note-taking or drafting apps before.

Please help me if you’ve experienced something similar.

Specifically, what was the full path file name for the missing document? In other words, where was it and where are you looking for it now?

And, perhaps now is time to restore that project (macOS “package”) from your system backup dated before you upgraded Scrivener?

I had it backing up to my iCloud drive, the file ending in .scriv

I have no idea how to restore the project, that’s why I’m here. I’ve already spoken to L&L’s support, they insisted that I had created the tutorial in 2018… So I haven’t really gotten anywhere in recovering my file.

Having L&L support involved is new information. Sorry, but I cannot do better than them, especially with the limited info you provide. iCloud is not a good backup but best you try anyway.

What files are listed under File > Recent in Scrivener?
