OS: WIN 10 64-bit
Scrivener V 2.9.9.4 Beta (same bahaviour observed in V 1.9.16.0)
Font: Jameel Noori Nastaleeq
Writing direction: Right to left
Observation
For some reason I don’t understand, in both Scrivener 2 and 3 beta, in my existing documents, Jameel Noori Nastaleeq font does not allow me to place/insert the cursor between letters inside a joined (compound) word. If I try The cursor jumps to the end or beginning of the joined word. This means if I make a spelling mistake I have to delete the whole word and rewrite or use Backspace key. This is awkward and slows me down.
Strangely enough, I just created a new document in each version, typed in the longest compound.joined Urdu word in Jameel Noori Nastaleeq font AND I could place my cursor anywhere within the word, insert a letter or delete a letter!
But opening an older document I created some time ago in either version, I cannot do it. I have both the old and the new document open at this moment.
Unable to figure what is going on…
Will upload samples when I can. Hard to show cursor position in screen shot…
Further testing (prompted by my wife when I showed her the bug) reveals I CAN move the cursor within a joined/compound word by using the Arrow keys.
It is only the mouse controlled cursor that jumps to the end or beginning of a word of an older document.
The test document I created yesterday with the longest Urdu word نستعلیقیات is still OK, that is, I can place the mouse cursor anywhere within a word.
It seems something changed during version updates and my older documents are stuck with the bug. (I had thought that was just the way things were).
I will now create a new project and try copying text from older document to the new one and play around with Paste, Paste and match style, etc and see if DA BUG RETURNS…
Instead of exporting old project to Word files and importing into new project
Just to confirm my long way around careful steps:
creating a new project,
manually creating binder contents
Default custom writing style in Editor: Noto Nastaliq Urdu font, Regular, Size 10, Justify, Right to Left writing direction.
copying text individually from each document created in the older beta version project
paste and match style option in the new project
NOW I can insert mouse controlled cursor anywhere within a joined/compound Urdu word.
AND
Taking your advice, I have opted to use Noto Nastaliq Urdu font for my Editor screen. It is not too bad looking for working in. It allows me to advance cursor one space each time I tap Space key, between words or not. I will Compile output with default Jameel Noori Nastaleeq font. So far it seems to have worked well.
Hooray! Be sure to politely thank and compliment your wife on her supreme out of the box technical thinking that resulted in such advanced bug shooting skills that allowed you to make progress in doing your writing with the best software ever, Abu!
