Using a portable HD to move files between Mac and iOS?

I store my scrivener projects on an external hard drive that I use with my Mac. If I plug the HD into my iPad can I access the projects I’m working on through scrivener iOS? Or is the only way to move files between my Mac and iPad through dropbox?

For privacy reasons I abandoned dropbox years ago and really don’t want to go back to that.

I don’t know anything about using an external drive with iOS, but if it shows up in Files.app, then yes, you can copy the project into Scrivener’s folder and it will show up in its project list. Copy it back when you are done. It’s the same idea you would use for any cloud service that has Files access (though there you often do need to use .zip files as Files isn’t very good at copying whole folders off of cloud servers, last I checked).

Check out §14.2.1, in the Mac/PC user manual PDF, under subheading, Managing Projects Directly with File Management. You wouldn’t need an external drive for instance, as you can manage files right on the device itself from your main computer. So unless you have a good reason to otherwise, that would be an additional step.

Thanks! I’ll look for the location of Scrivener’s iOS folder in the documentation.
