v.1.7.1.: can't reliably 'rename' folders or files

Since updating to v.1.7.1, right-clicking > ‘rename’ seldom works on files or folders

What happens instead? Is there a pattern to when it works and when it doesn’t? I can’t reproduce this just clicking around in the binder, and I haven’t seen other reports on it, so all the details you can provide would be helpful. What version of Windows are you running?

There doesn’t seem to be a pattern - I tried several times to rename a folder I really wanted to rename and failed. I then tried ‘clicking around the binder’ to rename various files in different projects - it worked about 1 in 6 goes but I don’t know why.

[ThinkPad T500: Win 7 Pro SP1 32-bit]

Does it just not switch the title text field to become editable? Or does it switch but the new name does’t stick?

Nothing happens at all - the field doesn’t change

Just tried again today (June 4) in various places in 3 projects but ‘rename’ did nothing anywhere

Same here. Rename does nothing. It does not open an editable field or anything else. Not one in six but every file in binder.

shass, are you also running XP? Can either of use use F2 to rename reliably, or is it the same as the Rename option from the context menu?

F2 works every time; right-click > ‘Rename’ doesn’t.

[ThinkPad T500: Win 7 Pro SP1 32-bit]

F2 works fine thanks, just not the rename on right mouse button menu. I had been using double left mouse click but F2 is better thanks. I am running Windows 7.

Although only F2 works on my 32-bit laptop (see below), both F2 & ‘right-click > Rename’ seem to work on my 64-bit laptop. Both run Win 7 Pro SP1.

We’ve been looking into this but haven’t found anything that might be causing the problem. Could either of you provide a screencast showing the problem with renaming a binder document via the right-click context menu? That would help show how the selections are working and other aspects of the setup that might be relevant to reproducing it. Thanks!

I tried again with files from 3 projects this morning: the first time the right-click/Rename didn’t work anywhere but F2 did. Later rt-click/Rename worked in 1 of the 3 only. Yesterday, during the course of the day, ‘Rename’ usually seemed to work ok.

I’m not sure how to send a screen-shot (I usually use Pic-pick) - or of what: the screen showing ‘rt-click/Rename’ and nothing happening or what?

On another point, when I get e-mails telling me there is a new message and I click on the link, it asks me to sign in, even though I have elsewhere said I would like to be signed in automatically.

We need a video, rather than just a still image, so that the selection state and everything else can be seen as it happens. Jing is one option that provides online hosting for the screencast (you need to create an account, but it’s free), so you could just provide a link; there are other options with similar abilities, and you can attach a small zipped video file here if need be or mail it to windows.support AT literatureandlatte DOT com.

I’m not sure why you’re always being prompted to login for the link if you’re already signed in. Is your browser perhaps not remembering the board cookies?

This sounds terribly complicated and time-consuming. In fact, I don’t know what a video would show as, when I right-click on a name & then on ‘Rename’, northing happens. When I click F2, the name-field changes as it should; I rename it, click Enter and the new name appears.

Just a quick thought that i can’t verify…

Does the menu item highlight before you click? It might be that your are “unlucky” and your mouse in a “void” between menu items the times it doesn’t work. I’ve only had something like this happen with using a track pad to click (move selection to disabled menu on accident) but it just might be happening in this case.

Just a wild guess.

Yeah, as Jaysen said, the screencast was mainly about seeing how the selection worked when you right-clicked, and where focus was in the window, whether anything switched or flickered when it shouldn’t have, etc. Is the binder selection in the inactive state? Does it clear entirely when you right-click?

Does the menu item highlight before you click?

  • yes, quite normally but nothing changes when I right-click/Rename

  • I use a Trackpoint/Finger mouse (on a ThinkPad) but never normally have any trouble with it

… how the selection worked when you right-clicked, and where focus was in the window

  • nothing changes. The rt-click menu vanishes without doing anything

whether anything switched or flickered when it shouldn’t have

  • no

Is the binder selection in the inactive state?

  • what does this mean?

From my point of view, as long as it works when I click F2, that’s ok, but, I suppose, not from yours.
