Very slow to launch program

Hi!

I’ve been using Scrivener for many years now, and I love the program. I’m running the latest version (1.9.16.0), but I haven’t redownloaded the .exe in a long time, if that matters.

Trouble is, for the last week or more, Scrivener has been taking ages to actually launch - I often have to try launching it more than once before it will even load. I’ve never had this problem before in all my years of using the program. I use it multiple times every day and on multiple machines, working with multiple files (the one I have worked with lately is not by any means a large file); all of them have this issue, regardless of the size of the file being opened.

What could be causing this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Maverick. Welcome to the forum.

Antivirus after a recent virus definition update is my bet.
Go to your antivirus settings, and whitelist Scrivener. (Exclude it from its watch.)

Thanks for the reply!

I actually run no antivirus programs, hah.

Then I say figure out what all your machines have in common.
(If I may mention the obvious : what if you actually caught a virus…)

Your installation is up-to-date, but for Scrivener 1 for Windows, which hasn’t been updated for a couple of years (we stopped updating that version with the release of Scrivener 3). So, depending on what Windows OS you’re running on your computer, it’s possible that performance is deprecating with that version of Scrivener. More likely to be the case if you’re running Windows 10 or 11. You could try downloading the free trial of Scrivener 3 and seeing if that version performs better for you. If it does, the upgrade is either free or 49% off, depending on when you purchased your Scrivener 1 license. Upgrade details here.

Does Scrivener load slowly if you launch it without opening a project? You might need to hold the Shift key while launching Scrivener to prevent it from auto-opening a project to test this out.

If Scrivener is just slow to load even without a project open and you don’t want to switch to Scrivener 3 for some reason, you can try doing a fresh install of Scrivener 1 and see if that helps. Just run the Windows uninstaller to get rid of your current installation and download again through the link I included. Uninstalling/re-installing won’t affect your files.
