Vote closed: the L&L Book Club choice for July

After a few months in which we have selected a book from a mixed bag of genres, authors and publication dates, I thought for our next selection we could choose from a selection of novels by an individual author. Which of the following books by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) would you like to discuss in Book Club in July? Please cast your vote in our poll:

The result will be announced early in June, to allow plenty of time for you to acquire and read the selected title before our discussion in July.

You are very welcome to make suggestions for other books for us to read together — either reply to this message, or send me a PM. We’ll keep a list, and over the months ahead we’ll consider adding such suggestions to future book-choice polls.

When making a book suggestion, please remember that we will be reading books that are in the public domain in the UK and EU, where copyright laws protect work until 70 years after the author’s death.

All the best,
Astrid

Just a few days left in which to vote for the George Eliot book that our Book Club will read in July. Cast your vote here!

The results are in! Voting was rather sparse, but the clear winner for our next Book Club selection is Middlemarch by George Eliot. This is quite a lengthy read, so I’m planning on starting it straightaway, as holiday reading over the extra-long Bank Holiday weekend here in the UK. I hope that you will join us in July’s discussion of it, when the time comes.

In the meantime, discussion of our current book (The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane) has opened. I was surprised by how short that book is, so even if you haven’t read it yet, there is plenty of time to get stuck in during June. Let us know what you think of it.
