Weird italics behaviour

My favourite font is IBM Plex Serif. No problem: Scrivener has all sorts of options: regular, light, extra light. Each option has an italic version. I only use the light version. But every time I click on the I in the toolbar I instead get extralight italic even though there is a light italic. Then I have to switch the font back again. I have no idea how to stop this happening. There must be some rule somewhere but I’m baffled. Please help!

Mac OS 26.5.1

Scrivener 3.5.2

Have you tried de-activating the extra light version? Check in FontBook if you can de-activate it.

Alternately, create your own character style using the light version, name it whatever you want apart from “italic”, in Stste > Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts give it a shortcut, or reassign something like Ctrl-Cmd-i to italic, then Cmd-i to your style.

Any help?

Yes! I deactivated extra light from Font Book and it worked. Thank you so much, Mark.

I spoke too soon. Now Scrivener has changed all italics to helvetica oblique throughout my whole project.

I wonder if Font Book has actually de.activated your whole font family.

I’m out and about at the moment; when I’m home and at my computer, I’ll have a look, though someone else may come to the rescue first.

No, I’ve checked Font Book and only the extra light weights have been deactivated and are greyed out. I’ll just deal with it manually.
