All images in the sidebar (cover pictures, notes, bookmarks) are very low resolution! Even when added to the research folder. Is there anything I can do? Would switching to mac os improve this since they have all retina displays?
Have windows 11 pro and images are fine, Have you looked at your magnification of the image in the research folder. (check the footer and use the mouse wheel or right click to change the zoom. If you change there, that affects the image in the bookmark area as well.
Below is an AI image captured from a portable monitor screen.
and another at 100% magnification
Im using windows 11 with a huge 4k screen. There is a huge difference in details. Scrivener images a very blurry / low resolution. The forum doesnt allow me to post images here so i post the photo links.
Here is Scrivener:
And here is the normal image:
How are you inserting images? According to this blog post, when inserting an image as opposed to linking to it, Scrivener duplicates the image at its original resolution. I would expect images that are directly inserted to display at their full resolution.
However, if you are linking to an image by choosing Insert > Image Linked to File, “Scrivener creates a preview of the image, rather than copying what could be a large file.”
If you are doing the latter, I would not be surprised if the preview image generated by Scrivener is not the higher resolution of the original.
In either case, though, images should r̶e̶n̶d̶e̶r̶ compile at their full resolution.
Someone with more experience will have to tell us if I’m right.
If I drag and drop an image into the editor (where Im writing in the document) the image is full resolution. But this is not my use case for images. Im talking about drag and drop images into the sidebar (right side)/ into the inspector, for adding a cover image, or for adding it as a bookmark. Those images are heavily reduced in resolution. Which doesnt make sense. Because for each image I add into the sidebar it creates a new file on the drive in the projects folder. The images there are all normal resolution. Just in the sidebar their are not. When adding images into the research folder, drag an drop into the binder left side they are also low res.
Got it. I suppose I’d be looking for a repository of lower-res images that Scrivener is creating for performance reasons, other than in the folder you’ve been looking in. If there are no other possible folders to investigate, then I’ve got no other thoughts.
(I emphasize that I have no idea what the answer is but am sure someone more experienced will jump in.)
Yes I think this is a design choise for performance reasons. I am curious though if this is different on mac os since those displays are all high resolution.
Try file>import> file as research shortcut. Should get full image without lots of data to project size and can bookmark those files.
Its also low res. Its seems like on macos the same project file looks fine though. The only work arround on windows is to use Insert > Image Linked to File command which only works for the notes tab.
That is weird, be curious if L&L has any thoughts.
