I saw a similar - but not quite the same - post from someone in September.

When I try to pull the word count through project statistics, I get repeated bars of “converting”, no statistics though. I end up cancelling the repeating bars (they end and start over), and Scrivener wants to save a very long alpha-numerically named Word document to a temp file. Still no project statistics though. I did not have this issue last year. I upgraded to the latest version of Scrivener this year.

Updated 11/9/14: I originally posted this for Windows 7, but am correcting to Windows 8. I also have a Windows 7 PC and the issue does not come up. However, it continues on Windows 8. I can cancel Scriveners attempt to convert, and then I get the word count. Converting lock continues. Can’t compile for word verification either on Windows 8. Is anyone else having this issue? Thank you.

Yes, I had this problem too on my new machine with Windows 8 * (no problem on my old Windows 7 machine).

I changed my settings and it seems to have helped.

Import/Export tab of Tools > Options

Change the export converters used. Click “Export Converters…” and then select DOC from the left menu and change the option in the right to “RTF-based”.

Select DOCX in the left and then from the menu on the right: “Scrivener”.

Select PDF in the left and then “Scrivener” to the right.
