The project I’m working on, in many chapters (each one a separate document), has gradually built to a word count of 62,113. Yesterday I noticed that the total word count is now shown as 55,563. I’ve compared the working file of 55,563 with a recent backup that shows a word count of 62,022. I’ve gone through each chapter (document) and cannot find anything that would account for this drop in the total word count shown. Individual word counts of the chapters are much the same in the working file as they are in the backup file, and do not show any sharp drop anywhere. Any help in solving this mystery would be appreciated.
Where are you reading the word count from?
The most likely difference would be a change in the Compile Settings or a change in what’s included in a Scrivenings session.
Thank you. I don’t use either of those. It is possible that I changed their settings without realising it, but I can’t see any sign that I did.
I’m reading the total word count from the top of the screen in a space which shows you the name of the chapter and also allows you to enter text for a quick search of the whole Draft. Word count for individual chapters I am reading from the bottom of the screen.
That word count reflects the word count of the output you would get if you compiled what is in your Draft folder.
In the Inspector, for each document, there is a simple checkbox labeled “Include in Compile”. If this got unchecked for any of your docs, then the word count of that doc would no longer be counted in the total. That might explain it, except 10k words is alot and probably not all in one doc. (( You can quickly check all your docs for their include state: If you hit the Compile button and look at the right pane of the dialog box you can quickly survey the docs in your Draft folder and note any which are not checked for inclusion. You can Cancel out of the dialog box after noting what you need to note. ))
Bingo! For one of the chapters, a particularly long one, the “include in Compile” checkbox was unchecked. I’ve checked the box now and my total word count is back where it was originally. The text had always been there, but as you say not counted because it was not part of the supposed compiling.
Thank you very much, gr. I am relieved to know that.
