Word count for Notes/Ideas

Hi all.

I’ve got a lot of various scribbled notes and snippets all through the Notes & Ideas section of my project - is there a way to get a word count/page count on that stuff?

Scrivener 3 on windows if it’s relevant

Do you want a tally of all the words in the project including those notes and snippets?

Or, do you want those items counted without including any of the draft of your project?

The first option will be the easier one to obtain. In Section 20.1 of the manual, Scrivener’s word count and goal-setting tools are explained.

As a quick overview, you can go to Project > Statistics and then change the settings on the Options tab so the following boxes are marked:

-Footnotes
-Count all documents
-Count subdocuments

Then, you can select “Accurate (Slower)” in the drop-down and click back to the Compiled tab. Scrivener should recalculate the word-count totals based on those new settings.

If you’re particular about just the notes and jottings totals, you might toggle back and forth between the settings to get a count for everything included and then the notes excluded. Subtracting the smaller count from the larger would give you an approximate word count for the notes.

If your count needs to be exact, then you might need to compile just those notes and jottings into a Word doc so you can get a firm word count as well as a page count.

Chapters 23 and 24 in the manual address Scrivener’s compile process. You can access the manual in PDF via Scrivener’s Help menu.

And, even though you’re a Windows user, I recommend reviewing our 4-part video series titled “Getting Your Work Out” on the Mac tutorial videos page. Those videos demonstrate using the built-in compile formats as well as show the customization process. Since the Mac settings are fairly similar to the Windows settings, seeing them might be helpful.

Thanks for all the advice
