(Word Count Question) I duplicated a file

… and then I cut pieces from one and different pieces from the other. Then I removed the “cuts” I don’t want (yet, in some cases) from the compile list.

My word count today is minus 1704. The pieces I removed add up to 2239 words. If I add them back in, then my word count becomes more negative. (I would expect it to become less negative, if I’m adding words…

Because I have notifications turned on for session targets and document targets, I had a lot pop up – and not for long enough – so I suspect the issue I’m having is because of how I cut the pieces out. For one cut I was comfortable doing a [ cut / new doc / paste ] because it was so small.

Is this a very rare and unusual ‘bug’ or is this a case of “You’re not supposed to do it that way!”

By your description, that shouldn’t be.
You should only get a negative by removing more words than you added during the course of a single session.

Note that the session targets doesn’t take into account whether a document is set to be included in compile or not if this is checked from the target’s options :

So, if this is checked, it should mean that you actually removed 1704 words more than you added during the session. Removed by delete or Ctrl-X. And therefore, you can’t “get them back” by reverting the include in compile state of the source document.

Now, as to how or why you get an even higher negative count by bringing some content back in the project, I have no idea.

Unless it is the reverse situation maybe.
The target counts only documents set to be included in compile (meaning that you have the above option rather unchecked), and having deleted words from documents set to NOT be included in compile, those documents affects negatively the count when you set them to be included in compile…
Maybe maybe maybe. (It is just a theory.)

I checked that dialog – I have the first one UNchecked. While doing that, I noticed on the “Session Target” tab that I could check “Automatically calculate from draft deadline”!!! I’m going to leave it on today and see if I like that. It dropped my daily target from 4400 to 3900. I read that to mean I’m doing good. I think.

I’ll definitely continue paying attention to my numbers and report here if I get any additional details.

Don’t forget to set a deadline for your project, or this won’t fly…:slightly_smiling_face:
