Word count target lost

I keep my projects in a Dropbox folder and I am the only one using them.
Yes, I am careful to close a project before accessing it on another machine. This has worked fine with one exception - the Draft word count target is not saved across machines.

If I set a target on machine A, it’s visible across any number of saves and closes. But if I open the project on machine B, the target is gone. I can set a target on B and it will behave as expected. If I open on A again, the target count is gone.

Is the word count target stored outside the project directory? If not, what am I missing?
