Working from Macbook or iPad file not working

I have tried all the paths available through google searches, youtube and this forum. I still get the error message on my iPad that the project cannot be opened because it does not contain a valid binder structure file. I have done everything from the links you sent to others but still it will not work. Can you help? BTW I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling apps on my iPad

Does the project still open normally on Mac? If so, try using: File → Sync → with Mobile Devices and then make some change to the project (add an extra scene, edit a scene, some change), then exit Scrivener on Mac. Allow the project to backup and propagate to your sync provider, then sync to your iPad and try to open it again.

This error is usually caused by an incomplete sync operation. Please ensure that you have “offline access” enabled for what ever sync provider you are using.

For what it’s worth, the ‘single’ project file is actually something like a zip file, and the Binder Structure file is contained within it. If your sync provider is trying to serve the file from the cloud when you are loading it, the lag might be enough to run afoul of Scrivener’s error handling tests and thus the message. Worse, if the sync process really does go wrong, then it is possible for the mobile changes to the binder file to become corrupted.

Dain,

It still works appropriately on my Mac. I tried to change a bit in the file then closed it and tried to open it in my iPad, but same error. Any other advice?

Yes. Create a new project on Mac. Then File → Import → Scrivener Project → [your broken project]

This will insert a folder at the bottom of the binder that is labeled as the original project’s name, and will contain everything from the old binder tree in that folder.

This folder is outside of the manuscript portion of the binder, but nothing will stop you from grabbing whole sections of your old project and dragging them out of that import folder and where they need to be.

This is a means by which you are generating an entire new support framework for your existing work. No words will be lost. Hopefully this will get around the binder corruption you are dealing with.

If that doesn’t produce useful results, I think it’s time to submit a support ticket and let the L&L boffins have a go at helping you privately.

Before rebuilding a project that opens just fine on the Mac, I would try another way of copying the project. Peruse the alternative methods described in the Scrivener for Mac user manual, under §14.2.3, Managing Projects Directly. AirDrop, for example, is probably the simplest, but if you have your device set up to show in the Finder sidebar when it’s on the same network, that’s pretty simple too.

Dain and AmberV,

I tried a combination of your ideas. Upon trying to airdrop the file from my deskstop I inadvertently made a copy. I never figured out how to airdrop, but when I glanced over at my iPad it had the copy showing in the Scivener app folder, and upon trying it
. it opened! Problem solved. Thank you both for your help.

Great! Now that you have it copied over successfully to the iPad, you can probably drag it up to the Dropbox sync area on the project management screen, after deleting the copy that won’t open.

Do be cautious though, the fact that Dropbox on your Mac seems to not be uploading all of the project data means that you’ll very likely continue running into problems. You could confirm this by using the Dropbox website to download the project to your Mac, to a temporary location, and try loading it. If you get the same types of errors then that means for certain the Dropbox client on your Mac is not working properly.

That needs to be sorted somehow, and it’s likely something that would need to be resolved with Dropbox support. Scrivener can only work with the data it has been given. If a technology isn’t fully copying a project, there isn’t anything we can do about that.

So until you get that sorted out, I would myself handle copies manually, as you’ve now learned to do. You can send your updates back to the Mac from the main project management screen, by tapping Edit, selecting the project, and then “sharing” it.
