Writing Month is coming soon - a NaNoWriMo alternative

Writing Month proposes:

While we love the idea of National Novel Writing Month, we’re pretty fed up with what the organization behind it is doing. We’re currently actively developing an alternative site, focused on the values and community focus that made NaNoWriMo great, but without the negative sides the organization has brought to the table.

and:

Do I have to write 50,000 words?

The current plan is to have a number of main goal categories, plus the ability to set a custom goal. Currently, we’re envisioning:

  • Novel Writing Month - 50,000 words
  • Novella Writing Month - 20,000 words
  • Short Story Writing Month - 5 stories of at least 2,000 words each
  • Poetry Writing Month - 1 poem per day
  • Blog Post Writing Month - 1 blog post per day
  • Graphic Novel Writing Month (maybe?) - a 50-page graphic novel
  • …or, of course, a custom goal.

This is the person behind it: Amon Hollon, and his other Fediverse account, and this is what he does: Freedom to Write

Freedom to Write is a movement dedicated toward creating and
supporting Free and Open Source software solutions for the writing industry. We dream of a world where all writers can publish their work without having to rely on proprietary software.

So it doesn’t look like he’ll be accepting a sponsorship from L&L.

I hope he also only gives his writing away for free if he’s so insistent on people who write code doing so.

In the words of a person on the street “NaNoWriMo I know but who are you?”

The activities of a few people who had been given moderator status on the forums queered the pitch for all users. Something that the organisation is working to prevent recurrance. All that does not stop NaNoWriMo as a concept or progress tracker being useful.

An absolutely fantastic point.

It’s literally their help page. Those “few users” are speaking for the entire organization. So…a few users it may be, but it’s clear this runs deep.

Do you mean the board of directors because then yes they do speak for the organisation?

The “few” I refered are a moderator whose on and off board behaviours were despicable; they were removed (and their involvement in Discourse itself curtailed. Plus a long standing ex-employee who criticised the hiring of a new member of staff as “a diversity hire”. Neither of them spoke or speak for nor have any involvement in the organisation/operation since October 2023. It would be inappropriate to name them here but I know their names having had run-ins with them both over moderation incnsistencies and ad hominem comments they made about me.
