XP PROBLEMS RUNNING SCRIVENER (READ THIS IMPORTANT NOTICE)

XP PROBLEMS RUNNING SCRIVENER 1.0 (PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT NOTICE)

There is a key Microsoft package that Scrivener needs installed to function that is included in service packs from Microsoft for Windows XP. If your machine is not up to date with the latest service pack 3 you might experience the following error when trying to start Scrivener. If you installed Scrivener as an admin you should not receive the error as the installer should have taken care of it if it is missing, if you did not install as admin and the required file is missing you will see the following error:

IF YOU GET THE FOLLOWING ERROR MESSAGE YOU NEED THIS FILE:
XPERROR.PNG
“This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.”

REQUIRED FILE:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)

REINSTALLING SCRIVENER WILL NOT FIX THIS ISSUE.

This is due to the Microsoft Redistributable C++ Runtime not being installed on your machine. This is easily fixed by opening Windows Explorer and navigating to the directory where Scrivener is installed.

In the Scrivener directory, you will find a directory called resources, within this directory is another directory called vcpp runtime. If you open the vcpp runtime directory and double click on the vcredist_x86.exe file within it and follow the installer prompts, this will install the missing Microsoft Redistributable C++ Runtime files. You will need administrator rights to you machine to install this.

After installing, try launching Scrivener again, it will now work.

In most cases, the path to the Microsoft installer will be similar to the following:
For 32bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Scrivener\resources\vcpp runtime\vcredist_x86.exe
For 64bit Windows C:\Program Files (x86)\Scrivener\resources\vcpp runtime\vcredist_x86.exe

OTHER PROBLEMS YOU MIGHT ENCOUNTER

MICROSOFT DIRECT X
Microsoft’s Direct X end-user run time may or may not be required and is not critical to Scrivener running. The easiest way to tell if you do not have Direct X installed is if you can’t play audio and video files within Scrivener. Once again this is installed by default on all newer versions of Windows and Windows XP versions that are up to date with the in-built Microsoft Update function.

IF YOU CAN’T PLAY AUDIO AND VIDEO WITHIN SCRIVENER YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Microsoft. The assumption of course being that you have relevant drivers and hardware installed on your machine to play audio and video in the first place.

Should someone be using Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package or Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package SP1?

It shouldn’t matter. We’ve tested Scrivener under XP with the following:

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package
Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package SP1
Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package

So, let’s just stick with the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package to make things easier if Scrivener users have problems starting Scrivener on XP.

I’m running Win XP Media, have read the important notice, dl’ed the .exe file required. Still unable to invoke the beta app. :\

No error message of any kind. Just the cursor flashing to hourglass a time or two and then nothing.

Edit: problem resolved at last!

Scrivener on Windows XP, at least in my case, doesn’t underline the misspelled words. It works fine of my two other computers, with Win 7 and Win Vista. Can you please tell me what I am missing? I ran latest updates, re-installed the software, still nothing. Thank you.

Did try to hide binder, then started it up and hide again. And windows gave me the nxt

You can click File → New Project to create a new project. If you already have a project to open you can hit Open instead. If you want the New Project window to launch when you X out of project you can change this in your Options menu.

Running Scrivener 1.4 on XP
okay startup and entering a couple chapters on Friday, but Sunday program crash (not affecting other running programs (Explorer, internet)).
Expected: Open program … pop up to reminder that Jan 30, 2011 program will cease to be accessible … automatically open program in background or else click to acknowledge and then go to program.
Actual: Open program … pop up to reminder that Jan 30, 2011 program will cease to be accessible … clicked to acknowledge and then waited and waited. I clicked on “untitled” section, and close program (red X) multiple times, with no change. Other programs worked witout interruption.

Just wanted to say ‘thank you’ for this info. It saved me from alot of grief. Looking forward to using Scrivener!
