Alt-Click for opening Links

As title says, but to expand on it: Including a shortcut like Alt-Click for opening a link in Other Editor while the default setting is to open links in the Main Editor. Or vice versa.

The idea came from Vincent in this thread where I asked if such a thing existed: Open in Other Editor Shortcut doesn't do anything? - #8 by Vincent_Vincent

This solution he came up with is real elegant!

I’ve moved this to the Windows section, as the Mac already has multiple modifier keys on link clicks. We do have this on the list to look at, along with making it so clicking on links does nothing unless you hold down Ctrl (like most text editors do).

Oh, sorry, I didn’t realise I posted this in the Mac specific section. Apologies.

But excellent! The need to use the context menu to open in other editor (when needed) is the most significant hurdle I encounter regularly. Which, to your credit, shows how good the program really is

Oh no worries, you had filed it to the global wish list, which is 99.99% of the time perfectly fine. We don’t expect everyone to know every little tiny detail that is different between platforms.

Something to consider is that if you split first, and then click on the link, you’ll get roughly the same effect. I use the keyboard shortcut to split, so really the only slow-down is reaching for the mouse to click on the link. I do have links set to open in the current editor, which is what makes that work.

Well, I have my editors perpetually split

There’s a main I look at 99% of the time, and then the other one is whatever I’m working off of.

Specifically I’m writing a TTRPG system, so I’ll often have subsystems and mechanics I need to read in the other editor, while I write in the main. As an example, I’ll have one chapter I’m working on, which references another mechanic with a link in its text, but I still need the actual chapter I’m working on in focus.

In those moments—and there are a lot of them—I really miss the ability to just say “open in other” with a preset macro (alt-click) coded to my mouse.

And the problem with the suggestion in my original thread to just set links to open in other editor by default, is that this makes it too difficult to quickly navigate through a chain of links, while in flow state or while we’re playing.

If I’ve understood you correctly, your suggestion doesn’t quite solve that, right?
