A relative workaround. If it is only a question of “other editor vs current editor”, one thing you could do, that would get you closer to what you want, would be to set the options to always open the links in the other editor. You can then make that other editor be the sole editor via a single click, top right corner, whenever you would otherwise have opted for the link to open in place (current editor).
Perhaps you could even build an AutoHotKey macro, if you take advantage of that. And think about it for a while. (Which I haven’t. Thus the “perhaps” 
)

What would be nice is if there was a configurable Alt+click in the options, like there is for other things.
Like :
click –> current editor
Alt+click –> Other editor.
